This is what happens when a government legitimately given the mandate to lead the people turns against the very people they pledged allegiance to, against the very constitution they pledged to uphold. Our next talk will be given by Dr. Séan Ó Duibhir. The lecture will take place in the Anderson Theatre at 8.00pm on the 12th of November and is available to the public to attend. Series: Impactful Irish Elections Title: "‘There must be Order': The 1932 & 1933 General Elections" Blurb: Regarded as amongst the most significant in the state’s history, the 1932 election, together with its ‘addendum’ contest in 1933, upended the electoral status quo and brought about a long-term rebalancing of political forces within the Irish polity. Moreover, these contests precipitated a trade war with Ireland’s nearest neighbour; briefly threatened a re-run of the Civil War between pro- and anti-Treatyite factions; prompted the development of a pseudo-fascist Blueshirt movement; and contributed to the abolition of the parliament’s upper house, sparking fears in some quarters of a creeping ‘de Valera dictatorship’. In this lecture, Dr. Séan Ó Duibhir will address us on the context, the campaigns, and the consequences of the two elections that heralded the attainment of constitutional anti-Treatyite power, but led ultimately to the consolidation of Irish democratic structures and the stabilisation of the state itself.

What if Section 33 becomes an issue in the next election campaign? Here's part 2 of our series on the Charter’s notwithstanding clause. In the first part, we covered opinions in Canada on the question of whether governments should have the power to use the clause to overrule the courts on decisions based on the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. This time, we look at whether opinions on this issue vary according to political partisanship: do Liberal Party, Conservative Party and NDP supporters hold different views on the relationship between legislatures and the courts? This is a really pathetic argument against Proportional Representation (PR). So, PR will result in Reform UK gain a number of seats in Parliament. 'It will open the door to people like Nigel Farage' says the letter writer below. Errr...I don't know if you've been paying attention to British politics recently Mr. statement-of-the-bleeding-obvious but...it looks like to door is already wide open for Mr. Farage. In fact, he's already through it comfortably and enjoying a martini on the sofa. Meanwhile, power is changing hands and absolutely no-one is excited by it. No-one. The public, the actual public not retired factory workers in Thurrock with to buy to let property empires, are completely bored of this election and just want it to be over. Trust in politics is at an all time low, when a new party is coming into government. That's really strange, and dark actually. PR is badly needed to give the British public a real choice and end this rigged, gerry-mandered, voter-supressed sham of a democracy. #election2024 #Britainelects #generalelection2024 #Proportionalrepresentation #Farage

A tense political situation has developed in Georgia following the government's decision to postpone negotiations on joining the European Union until 2028. This decision has sparked mass protests by pro-European integration supporters, who have filled the square in front of the parliament in Tbilisi and other cities across the country. Demonstrators are expressing dissatisfaction with the policies of the ruling party, "Georgian Dream," and are demanding the resumption of the EU integration course. The President of Georgia, Salome Zourabichvili, whose mandate has expired, declared that she will not step down, arguing that the current parliament is illegitimate. She has filed a lawsuit with the Constitutional Court, seeking to invalidate the results of the parliamentary elections due to violations of the principles of universality and secrecy of voting. Zourabichvili emphasized that she will remain in office until a new parliament is formed, which, in her view, will comply with constitutional norms. Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze accused the opposition of attempting a violent power grab and stated that the government would not allow a repeat of the Ukrainian Maidan scenario in Georgia. He stressed that the decision to suspend negotiations with the EU was made due to the need to prepare the country for the Union's economic requirements. #GeorgiaProtests #EUIntegration #TbilisiDemonstrations #GeorgianDream #SalomeZourabichvili #PoliticalCrisis #IrakliKobakhidze #StandWithGeorgia #DemocracyInGeorgia #FutureInEurope
