How does a radial engine work? Radial engines arrange pistons in a circle around the crankshaft, unlike multi-cylinder car engine designs. The cylinders are numbered from the top, going clockwise, with the first cylinder numbered 1. History of radial engines The original radial engine design was patented by Georges Canton and Pierre Unné in 1909 and offered to the Salmson company. Radial engines were once the pinnacle of internal combustion engine design but have since declined in use. One particular aspect of the #NextGenSpacesuit we have honed in on is the ability to upgrade as new technology becomes available. If your product is not able to adapt to changes, limitations will ultimately occur resulting from part and technology obsolescence. We have seen in both space and national defense programs, life extensions become far more challenging after parts are no longer available, suppliers go out of business, or backwards compatibility is lost resulting from technology evolution.
