Getting close to the end of the year, so nothing better than wrapping up a search for one of our Series A clients in Seattle/Bellevue. The nice part about working with clients over extended periods of time is you get to become a well oiled machine. Hiring during the holidays can be notoriously difficult due to days off, limited timelines, team pto days, etc... Open lines of communication made partnering with the Director of DevSecOps on their DevOps engineer search a breeze. Quickly identified a few candidates, interviewed three profiles we sent over, and one ended up being the perfect fit. We worked through the interview process, juggled Thanksgiving break, a competing offer, and were able to get our offer signed this week before we hit the end of year break. Hey friends, colleagues, recruiters, hiring managers, and anyone looking for people who perhaps dont fit the standard tech industry mold: I'm looking for a new role, and you should really consider me. (IC roles, Manager roles, Director roles, I'm open to anything!) Take a look at my profile. I'm king of the generalists. I'm the guy who can figure things out, even when I have no previous experience in it. I know you all think you want/need a Software Engineer for every role, but you're doing yourself a disservice! My superpower isnt knowing code (I am NOT a software engineer and I never have been). My superpower is problem solving, whether that is code or infrastructure or operations or people management. A few highlights: At Palantir, I hacked together solutions to deliver low(er)-latency developer experiences with Atlassian products. At Leeo, I hacked together solutions in the Linux kernel (in a language I didnt know) to work around manufacturing defects in their hardware product. At Leeo, I figured out how to make the core audio detection functionality work (in a language I didnt know, in an entirely new to me problem space). At Twitch, I developed their first synthetic-test-based global availability monitoring system. At Twitch, I built their Video CDN Operations (Operational Excellence, SRE) organization from scratch, implementing best practices, and growing junior engineers into Principle Engineers and Directors of Engineering. But I probably wont pass your code interview.

There are heaps of SRE jobs being toted on LinkedIn. A lot of them are shit. You might get lured in by the responsibilities and title. But when you boil them down, they're SysAdmin roles, being deceptively advertised as development-focused. If you get conned into taking one, you could end up being burned out. Stunting your career growth. Miserable. How can you avoid falling into this trap? Get on the front foot in interviews and drill the hiring manager. You can ask them about their SLA/I/O's. Incident management processes, on-call work and how they prevent burnout in the team. But of all the hiring leaders I've interviewed over the last few weeks. The best ones with teams who seem to love them, all have one thing in common. They will keep your project time sacred. Because if you're not moving the dial on system resilience, availability and monitoring, you're never turning that pager off.

The face of IT is changing, layoffs are increasing year over year. If you just still relying on the coding skills to take you far ahead. Rethink the path. The key skills that are gonna be adding immense value to softwares would be - 1. The ability to make and chart an idea to reality - The structure 2. Optimization master - The ability to optimize code, db, cloud, security, cost. 3. The way you include different disciplines in your softwares like customer psychology, motivations, business understanding, communication. 4. Your commitment and trust. 5. Value over resumes - If you can provide immense value over just paper. 6. Ownership and leadership skills - Helping people turn powerful. 7. The ability to find the correct solution in 1-2 google search. 8. Learning the advanced tech daily. Everyday even 20 minutes puts you ahead from 95% of the people.
