https://lnkd.in/dhgEPZM5 " There is one issue on which there is surprising agreement in this chronically troubled and contentious country. A grand coalition of economic reason, if you will. And that is the question: Do Germans work too little? " This will have major impact on the outcome of the global technology race... #technology #productivity #germany #semiconductors #semiconductormanufacturing

Spoke with Tagesspiegel about the upcoming Trump presidency and its potential impact on trade and clean technologies. Of course, clean tech and other various types of sustainable technologies would be impacted, but this is of smaller concern for the Republican administration. Bigger potential clashes on steel, autos and many other traditional trade sectors. The EU needs to signal absolute unity and be ready to pass a firm message that we are not going to sit on our hands and respond with painful reciprocating measures. We don't want a trade war but are ready to respond. A trade war with the US is the most unwanted outcome, given how many common challenges we face internationally. https://lnkd.in/epBrNqyW

While our "Chancenministerium" (BMBF) and the "Fortschrittspartei" have sent battery research and development in paralysis, the US government acts and invests 16 bn USD (!) for new materials/battery/recycling projects, thus creating an enormous boost for a series of related branches. Catastrophic polling numbers for German chancellor Olaf Scholz and his ruling coalition party. In a poll conducted by Germany’s second public television channel ZDF, the results were the following: 77% respondents attested Scholz bad leadership competencies (inability to push his agenda through) 65% respondents thinks he is doing a bad job 74% respondents think he should not stand for re-election in 2025 49% of his own party the SPD think he should not stand for re-election 71% respondents think the government (the coalition of SPD/ Greens / FDP) does a bad job You don’t have to be a political scientist to understand that calm, steady and consus-driven Germany is over. #germany #scholz #bundesregierung #polls #zdf #umfrage #durchsetzungsvermoegen #zeitenwende

When ARD Monitor interviewed me last week for german TV I felt that was a really good opportunity to speak about why we need to put people first if we want to get the green renewal of our economies done. The future of the economy is going to be green, because demand will mostly be green. However, currently Germany is not providing a clear vision for how that future green economy will provide jobs and economic benefits for everyone. And thats a real problem because the no1 reason for far right voting behaviour is economic insecurity. So, if we want to get the green transition done, we need to be better at industrial policy for the people. https://lnkd.in/epjWUf5d #IndustrialPolicy #GreenTransition

Yesterday, the #German #Chancellor sent a #letter to #Ursula #von #der #Leyen outlining his key demands regarding energy, industrial transformation, and competitiveness. This comes at a critical time, just weeks #ahead of the #German #federal #elections in February, where economic policies and industrial strategy are at the center of the political debate. One of the most notable proposals is to #postpone the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (#CSRD) obligations by two years to alleviate the regulatory burden on companies. This move aims to protect businesses from overwhelming reporting demands while balancing climate commitments—a message that resonates strongly with Germany’s business sector during an election year. His main petitions are the following: 💡 #Reducing #bureaucracy and #supporting #industrial #transformation: To this end, he calls for a comprehensive review of EU regulations and highlights the specific case of #green #hydrogen #technologies, where strict requirements have increased costs and slowed adoption. He also advocates for procedural reforms, such as "materielle Präklusion," to prevent lengthy legal challenges that delay key projects. Significantly, he proposes #postponing the #CSRD #obligations for two years and raising reporting thresholds to avoid overwhelming small and medium enterprises (SMEs). 🚗 #Strengthening #competitiveness in the #automotive #industry: The Chancellor calls for a roadmap to give clarity to the sector. Moreover, to encourage EV adoption, the Chancellor outlines a national plan for tax deductions for EVs produced domestically and suggests extending similar incentives across the EU. A critical component is his call for a negotiated solution with China regarding tariffs on European-made EVs. Without an agreement, European manufacturers risk losing their competitive edge in the global market, an issue that has gained significant political traction amid rising economic nationalism. ⚙️ #Supporting #energy-#intensive #industries: The Chancellor’s proposals for energy-intensive industries highlight the strategic role of sectors such as #steel in Europe’s industrial base and defense capabilities. He calls for a European summit on the steel industry in early 2025 to address challenges related to green steel production and trade protections. The letter also proposes a #revision of the #CBAM to simplify procedures and introduce compensation for European exporters to maintain global competitiveness. Additionally, the Chancellor requests an #extension of #electricity #cost #compensation schemes until 2030 and an expansion to include sectors such as battery manufacturing.

🇨🇳🇨🇳🇨🇳 Important and necessary trip by Chancellor Scholz, in the interest of #Germany and its citizens 👉 although Berlin’s, Hamburg’s and Munich’s small think tank bubble want people to believe different. This think tank circle may be small, but they have far too much influence on the public discourse. 📊Just like Merkel, Scholz is bringing a business delegation to one of the country’s most important markets 🇨🇳. 🤺Resisting the (false) narrative at home, Scholz is doing what is right - for Germany, Europe and open markets in general. 🇺🇸The US may be pursuing an alternative strategy, but America’s interests are not necessarily always Germany’s interests. https://lnkd.in/gUtVhX3P
