Is the retail giant REWE Group building Germany’s first food-superapp? 🛒📲 Rewe has always been a pioneer in digital offers and now expands its portfolio with investments and partnerships. Last month alone, 2 deals hit the news: 1️⃣ Rewe participated in Flink's new funding round of 150$mn valued at ~900$mn (down about 70% since its peak valuation). With this cash injection, Flink plans to break even in Q2 2025, apparently having reached operational profitability in selected markets already today. Also they plan to open 30 additional warehouses. 2️⃣ Lieferando and Rewe announced a partnership, providing access to 3000 SKUs of Rewe’s assortment via Lieferando’s app, delivered by Lieferando’s courier network. “Rewe Express” promises delivery times of 45 minutes, closing the gap between Rewe’s scheduled delivery and Flink’s ultrafast delivery. With the new offers, Rewe now ticks many boxes that I expect from a food-superapp, combining all things food, and beyond: ✅ Brick and mortar stores ✅ Click and collect ✅ Scheduled delivery ✅ Quick-commerce (via Flink and Lieferando) ✅ Offer promotions in app ✅ Digital travel agency ❌ The only piece missing is food delivery. Did you know that the Russian chains X5 and Magnit are also at the frontier of supermarket tech? ➡️ Magnit has integrated AI to monitor inventory at shelf level, ensuring products (including 5000 pharmacy SKUs) are always available for their 30 minute delivery & click and collect. ➡️ Meanwhile, X5 Group deploys smart shopping carts, automatically scanning products for a frictionless checkout. I’ve just talked about why the concept of the food-superapp is so appealing at a conference and will share the takeaways here, soon.

The future of Retail Stores is likely to be shaped by several key trends and innovations: 1.Increased Online Integration: As e-commerce continues to grow, traditional grocery stores will likely integrate online shopping more seamlessly, with features like fast delivery, curbside pickup, and click-and-collect services becoming more standard. Many retailers will invest in improving their apps and online platforms to provide a better digital experience. 2.Automation and AI: Automated checkout systems, smart carts, and AI-powered inventory management will streamline operations and enhance efficiency. Robots may be used for tasks like stocking shelves or managing inventory, and AI may play a larger role in personalizing shopping experiences through tailored recommendations. 3.Sustainability and Local Sourcing: Consumers are increasingly conscious of environmental impact. Retailers may prioritize sustainable practices, such as reducing plastic waste, offering bulk options, and sourcing more local and organic products. Zero-waste stores and reusable packaging initiatives are expected to grow. 4.Experiential Shopping: Physical grocery stores may focus on creating unique, immersive shopping experiences to draw in customers. This could include in-store dining, cooking demonstrations, or partnerships with local farms and suppliers. The rise of specialty sections or artisanal products could differentiate traditional stores from online competitors. 5. Health and Wellness: As consumers become more health-conscious, grocery stores may expand their offering of organic, plant-based, and health-centric products. Nutritional guidance, on-site dietitians, and personalized meal-planning services might be integrated into the shopping experience. 6.Smaller, Convenient Stores: In dense urban areas, there may be a rise in smaller, more convenient stores that cater to quick shopping trips, offering only essentials. These stores would rely heavily on technology for inventory management and customer convenience. 7. Data-Driven Personalization: With data analytics and AI, grocery retailers will increasingly personalize marketing, promotions, and even product recommendations based on individual shopping behaviors, driving customer loyalty and boosting sales. #retailstores #grocery #future

A recent article by the magazine Progressive Grocer, which specializes in everything related to grocers, has highlighted the trend📈 customers and supermarkets are adopting or willing to as technology continues to advance in this segment. "77% of shoppers say they are open to trying new grocery tech." According to Progressive Grocer. At INSTALANE, we recognized this openness and willingness of shoppers to try something new to eliminate the wasted time and unnecessary hassles we go through every time we go to a supermarket. This is why INSTALANE was born. However, we believe that these upcoming changes should be optional rather than mandatory, and they should strike the right balance between technology 🖥 and human interaction👫. After all, technology is for shoppers to use, not for computers. We believe technology should help us solve issues, not create more. Consider the example of Amazon, which has implemented grab-and-go technology in its Amazon Go stores since 2018, but for their larger supermarkets like Amazon Fresh, they opted for expensive shopping carts instead. This raises the question why they don’t use the same technology in all their supermarkets. At INSTALANE, we have found just the right balance ⚖. INSTALANE is not just an app 📱; it’s a system designed for both shoppers and supermarkets.

If you are offered an product at Discount which will be delivered tomorrow or if you want it today an premium which be charged, what will you do? The battle between DMart’s value-driven model and Zepto/Blinkit’s convenience-focused approach is heating up. Quick commerce platforms are changing how we shop, promising delivery in 10 minutes or the same day. But will people prioritize instant service over saving money? What People Want Quickly • Fresh items like milk, bread, and vegetables. • Daily essentials like snacks, toiletries, or over-the-counter medicines. • Impulse buys like ice cream or beverages. What People Are Willing to Wait For • Bulk purchases like rice, oil, and cleaning supplies. • Non-urgent items like clothes, electronics, or non-perishables. DMart’s Challenge DMart attracts customers with discounts and value for money. But with Zepto and Blinkit delivering essentials almost instantly, the question is: Will DMart fight back by offering even better discounts to make the wait worthwhile? Financial Snapshot DMart’s latest results show steady growth, but its profit margins have taken a slight hit. Meanwhile, quick commerce platforms are growing fast, especially in cities. Investors are split on whether DMart can keep its edge as competition rises. The Big Question As customers, would you wait to save money or pay more for speed? As investors, where would you put your money: in DMart’s long-term value model or in the fast-growing convenience platforms like Zepto and Blinkit? Let’s discuss! Share your thoughts below: Who will win—convenience or value? And where would you invest?
