The new supply-chain architecture: core-light, data-centric, and ecosystem-rich "A core-light technology architecture gives companies a rapid and flexible way to transform legacy supply chain systems. Leading companies achieve this flexibility by shrinking the ERP software core, so it becomes a single source of truth for critical data required by multiple applications. The remaining tasks that the ERP previously carried out are broken up into smaller modules, often called microservices. These modules and the ERP core connect through application programming interfaces (APIs)." In this article from a few years ago, Bain & Company discuss an architectural pattern that's not all ERP or all Best-of-Breed. It echoes the "composable" architecture that's been proposed by Gartner for a few years, which gave us the inspiration for Kompozable Ltd. We like the way that the Bain paper considers that not everything needs to be chucked away, instead opting for shrinking the ERP core and ring-fencing legacy/heritage applications that encapsulate critical business logic. Building microservices and APIs around these core components is the vital step that many organisations don't consider sufficiently. Exploiting integration platforms and tools is essential if you want to exploit innovative, emerging technologies and build distinct business capabilities that set you apart. In the quest for a truly integrated and digitised supply chain you may not need to throw everything away and start again, despite what your ERP vendor might want you to believe, but you do need to approach it strategically with a different enterprise architecture mindset.
