Prospecting to The Optimum Pipeline: My Shield and Sword. I never feel exposed in sales? Here’s the game-changer for me: the power of ten. In sales, my pipeline is my shield, and prospecting is my sword. With a deep pipeline, no one can hurt me, the strength of my conviction is directly proportional to the depth of my pipeline. My magic number? 10 deals. Less than 10, and I’m exposed, overly reliant on each deal. More than 10, and my focus gets scattered, impacting my effectiveness. It’s the sweet spot for me. It's the perfect balance - enough coverage without overwhelming me. Not everyone should have 10. 10 works for me. I have clients to look after, a business to run, and a team to lead. Everyone in selling should know their number and stick to it. When my pipeline exceeds 10 deals, I close the weakest one (btw it often triggers a "Buy" from my buyer, "No Carlos, I was just about to email you with a YES"). It’s like pruning a tree - cutting off the weakest branch fosters healthier growth. The remaining deals get sharper focus and move faster to close too. Humans are terrible at managing abundant resources. We squander them. But we are fabulous at managing scarce resources. We naturally and subconsciously optimize like a PhD Economist. So I treat a position in my pipeline as a scarce resource, a position of privilege, and a privilege that needs to be earned by my prospect. Earned through being open, honest, decisive, and cool. Over-reliance on a few deals breeds stress and poor decisions. But with 10 solid deals, I operate from abundance. My choices are strategic, not desperate. I deliver value, not just chase closes.
