In 2022, Professor Prof. Yahya Choonara joined our Editorial Advisory Board at AAPS PharmSciTech, bringing his vast experiences and expertise to benefit the peer-review process. Professor Choonara is internationally recognized as an outstanding global pharmaceutical scientist working for 17 years at the forefront of the pharmaceutical sciences to produce advanced life- saving medicines that have an impact on global infectious, hereditary, and lifestyle diseases. A Pharmacist by profession, in 2007 he co-founded the University of Witwatersrand’s Wits Advanced Drug Delivery Platform (WADDP) Research Unit (www.wits.ac.za/waddp), Africa’s largest Research Unit in its domain. His focus is on the design of novel drug delivery systems, nanomedicines, functional biomaterials, and regenerative medicine to produce patient-centric medicines for disease prevention/treatment. He is a Personal Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Witwatersrand’s Department of Pharmacy and Pharmacology and Director of the WADDP Research Unit. He is also a South African National Research Foundation (NRF) Research Chair in Prototyping 21st Century Therapeutics in Pharmaceutical Biomaterials, Nanomedicine, and Advanced Drug Delivery. He is an elected Fellow of several academies including the African Academy of Science (AAS) and The World Academy of Science (TWAS) and has been featured in Stanford University’s Top 2% of pharmaceutical scientists globally since 2020. He is the first pharmacist in South Africa to be awarded the national Department of Science and Innovation (DSI)’s Top Intellectual Property (IP) Creator Award, one of the country’s highest awards, for exceptional and distinguished contributions to innovation. He is an inventor of 47 pharmaceutical product patents aimed at improving the treatment of infectious diseases, oncology, neurotrauma, and within special patient groups, and 28 of these have been granted in international jurisdictions (USA, EU, UK, JPN, IND). In 2021 he received the Wits Vice Chancellor’s Research Innovation Award, in 2022 the Olusegun Obasanjo Award (the highest award conferred by the AAS), and the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) Distinguished Pharmaceutical Science Award (a first in Africa) for his outstanding contributions to the Pharmaceutical Sciences. He has published >371 research articles in ISI-accredited journals, 47 book chapters, Editor of 2 books, and contributed to >298 scientific presentations. His work is highly cited with >13734 citations (H-index=56). He is also passionate about developing the next generation of Pharmaceutical Scientists/Professors and has graduated >110 postgraduates and mentored 18 postdocs from nine countries. ISPE NL Affiliate Board is delighted to introduce the interview with our next Member in the Spotlight: Natalia Vtyurina, PhD, sMBA. Natalia is a member of ISPE since 2019 who joined ISPE NL Affiliate Board in 2022. She is an elected Chair of the ISPE NL Emerging Leaders CoP. "I was trained as a fundamental physicist at Moscow State University (2011) and obtained my PhD in biophysics from BioNanoScience Department of TU Delft (2016). This experience prompted me to proceed further towards a new challenge in biomedical research of Rijksuniversiteit Groningen. After a short scientific visit to Universitetet i Oslo (UiO), I completed my postdoctoral project in the field of nanomedicines and targeted drug delivery (2019). After spending 14 years in science, I decided to transition from academia to industry. First, working as a consultant in Life Sciences at ProPharma (2020) grounded me in all the necessary knowledge to fight COVID-19 pandemic. In a role of Quality Assurance (QA) I delivered >80M doses of AstraZeneca vector vaccine drug substance to the European market at CDMO HALIX (2022). Next, I joined Bristol Myers Squibb in the Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products (ATMP) field (2023). Losing my father last year in the fight against cancer makes my contribution to these project very relevant to me. I hope that more people can have access to this innovative new generation of personalized medicines providing them with another chance to be someone’s child, parent, partner or friend. Being social, proactive and passionate about innovation in the health care sector, I volunteer my time to the dynamic, fast developing and international non-profit environments such as Leiden Bio Science Park (LBSP) and International Society of Pharmaceutical Engineering (ISPE). Being engaged with all of these activities helps me to stay up to date with the most recent trends evolving together with them while continuously advancing my technical and transferable skills that eventually accelerate my career. Not being driven by money, while performing the tasks that I am free to choose myself, helps me to discover my true passions and realize my potential at the full scale. Within ISPE I also met a lot of wonderful like-minded experts from different levels with whom I share my passions. They became my role models giving me a clear direction where I want to be in 5-10 years from now. Many of them became my close friends, mentors and supporters in any challenge I might face in the future. I like to relax by giving stretching classes, get some strength and energy at Thai boxing training and reach harmony by doing ballet classes at classical music. Yesterday South Korea and Australia’s vibrant life science sectors came together at our Parkville campus for an afternoon dedicated to sharing insights into the rapidly advancing fields of biotechnology, pharmaceutical sciences and mRNA research and workforce development. Supported by the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the Australia-Korea collaboration featured speakers from The KOREA HEALTH INDUSTRY DEVELOPMENT INSTITUTE (KHIDI) UK LTD and Yonsei University’s Korea National Institute for Bioprocessing Research and Training (K-NIBRT), along with representatives from the Monash Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, FPPS, and leading voices from Australia’s vibrant life science sector - MTPConnect and mRNA Victoria.
