GREAT Content Disrupted episode with Skyword EVP, Dan Baptiste and NPR CMO, Michael Smith where they discuss that a brand’s voice isn’t just a stylistic choice—it’s a critical market differentiator. AND, overreliance on GenAI risks diluting this voice, resulting in content that, while plentiful, lacks the emotional impact and authenticity essential for audience engagement and trust. Take a listen and let me know if you agree.

Random acts of content. We've all done it, but does it have to be this way? Today, most content ideas come from primarily two channels: Search intent data: What content should we write in order to rank on Google. Our CXO had an idea: Tops-down mandate to create content around a certain topic, theme, or product area. Now both of these are fine inputs into a roadmap, but can often serve as a distraction from the content team's intention around creating valuable content and media across formats that drive audience engagement. But the promise of owning your audience data unlocks a powerful asset to fuel production decisions - first party data. Netflix leverages first-party data from their audience to tailor content. Imagine applying that kind of precision to your B2B content strategy — understanding which topics, or creator partnerships, or formats, or tone, or ANY relevant attributes are resonating with specific subsets of your audience. Every content investments becomes relevant and impactful, and the impact to revenue made known. I loved talking about this at greater length on the Revenue Makers podcast, and sharing how we’re pioneering this approach at AudiencePlus by using first-party data to inform everything from content production to personalized distribution. Will drop the full episode in a bit.

Here's how content consumption has evolved over time? Text: 📰 From Newspapers to Blogs and Newsletters 💻 Newspapers were once the go-to source for daily news and information. They offered a curated, authorized voice that we all relied on for updates around the world. Today, blogs and newsletters have become the new norm. Blogs allow individuals, experts to share their insights, stories, and updates in real-time. Meanwhile, newsletters have also experienced a resurgence. With services like Substack and Beehiiv, writers now have the power to send tailored content directly to the inboxes of their followers. Audio: 📻 From Radio to Podcasts 🎙️ In the early 20th century, radio was the primary source of audio content. Families would gather around the radio for news, entertainment, and storytelling. Radio had a massive reach, but it was a one-way, time-bound medium (You had to tune in at a specific time to catch your favorite shows). With the rise of the internet, podcasts have revolutionized how we consume audio content. Unlike radio, podcasts are on-demand, allowing listeners to tune in whenever they want. Video: 📺 From TV to YouTube Shorts and Instagram Reels 📱 Television reigned supreme in the 20th century, providing viewers with scheduled programming. TV shows, news broadcasts, and live events were must-watch experiences that required you to be in front of the screen at a specific time. Enter YouTube, Instagram Reels, and TikTok. The focus has shifted from long-form, scheduled content to short, bite-sized videos that are easily digestible. The difference is not just long form vs short form contents, the algorithms of these platforms serve up personalized recommendations, making video consumption an increasingly individualized experience. Did you find a common theme across these changes? It is Personalization and on-demand access!! Modern consumers don’t just want to passively consume content on someone else's schedule—we want control. Whether it’s listening to a podcast during a workout, watching a quick Instagram Reel in between meetings, or reading a newsletter over morning coffee, the shift has been toward content that fits seamlessly into the user's life. It'll be interesting to see how the future could bring even more immersive formats, such as virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) experiences, but the core principle remains the same: content must be convenient, personalized, and engaging! #contentconsumption

CONTENT IS KING. CURATION IS KINGDOM! In the past, there were only a handful of sources of content: newspapers, radio, TV, the internet, and a few others— a set menu of decent choices. Today, almost everyone and everything can be a source of content: podcasts, influencers, comedians, social media, audio, and much more—creating a buffet of varied choices. Choosing from a set menu is usually easier because of its limited options; conversely, selecting from a buffet can be overwhelming due to the abundance of choices. I prefer the set menu—it spares me the dilemma of too many choices. The buffet menu, on the other hand, can be quite daunting. Therefore, it's essential to CURATE the content you want to consume, much like curating the foods you want to eat from a buffet. I've learned that it helps to establish my preferred sources of content. For me, this includes a couple of newspapers, select books, specific themes, and favorite podcast channels and hosts. With this clarity, every other piece of content I encounter becomes secondary. Curation allows me to strategically anchor myself in a few key areas, preventing me from being swept away by the overwhelming tide of constant content. There’s no KING without KINGDOM. There’s no CONTENT without CURATION. P.S. Periodically evaluating and adjusting your sources of content is important for progress.
