this is how employers should think! if you respect your people you get those who respect you! if your employees respect you they will respect the business; bonds between employees and employers are essential to business growth. its as easy as saying we appreciate you and trust you because you get the job done.

LAST YEAR I ELIMINATED ALL PTO IN MY COMPANY No more Paid-Time-Off for anyone. It changed everything. You’re shaking your head, incredulous. “No vacation for anyone? You’ll lose all your employees!” I said no more PTO. I did not say no more vacation. No more negotiating, earning, consuming and tracking PTO. You take the time you need or want to do the things you need or want to do. Now you’re jumping up and down, apoplectic. “People will abuse this. They will take too much time off. The work won’t get done. Your business will fail.” Actually, my business thrived. Here’s the deal. People need to take time off at various points. Family obligations, a plumber’s visit, car maintenance…there are thousands of reasons. I know one chemical company, part of a Fortune 500 conglomerate that actually required employees to get permission from HR to work from home to meet an A/C repair service call in the dead of summer. Really??? But people also need to take time off to refresh, reset and lead a life. I learned early on to break down the word Recreation…Recreat-Tion. We need to recreate and renew the engine periodically. No one ever said on their death bed, “I wish I spent more time at the office.” Why should we not support this? Will people not work enough? Good question. There is always the unspoken message: If you do not get the work done, meet your professional obligations, or interact effectively… there won’t be a place for you on our team. But here is the really important part. It is up to me as the employer to make the work and environment stimulating and to provide the necessary incentives that each of my people will be motivated to get the job done. And that is what I care about them professionally. For them personally, I care that they lead a positive and fulfilling life. And what I found, as many studies have shown, is that my people actually do not abuse the benefit. Are they taking less days off than when we tracked PTO? Don’t know and don’t care. They are happy, growing, and getting the job done. And that is what matters. Let’s talk about it. And feel free to repost and/or comment on this. I love the feedback in comments.
