Facing ongoing workforce challenges, SSM Health is leveraging ShiftMed's W-2 on-demand model to create a more stable, sustainable staffing solution. In a recent HealthLeaders article, Jennifer Garnica, RN, BSN, MHA, VP of Nursing and CNO at SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital, shared how this approach has converted over 100 on-demand nurses into full-time staff, significantly improving nurse retention while saving on costly external agency contracts. By focusing on local workforce solutions, SSM Health has not only reduced its reliance on travel nurses but also stabilized its workforce, leading to improvements in healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) and overall patient experience. Additional benefits include enhanced morale, loyalty, longevity, and cost savings in recruiting and onboarding. The 2024 NSI National Health Care Retention & RN Staffing Report highlights the financial implications of nurse turnover. It reveals a $56,300 average cost per staff RN departure, marking a 7.5% increase from the previous year. This cost escalation equates to substantial annual losses ranging from $3.9 million to $5.8 million for the average hospital, as reported by Becker's Hospital Review. Crisis Stabilization Units (CSUs) face even greater challenges due to high turnover rates, which can disrupt patient care and inflate operational expenses. To address these issues, it is crucial to engage an experienced nurse executive specializing in CSUs. This leadership can drive initiatives to enhance retention by implementing targeted strategies, thereby reducing turnover costs. Additionally, optimizing workforce utilization by empowering nurses to work at their full scope of practice not only increases job satisfaction and efficiency but also contributes to significant cost savings for smaller organizations. By focusing on retention and workforce optimization, organizations can potentially save substantial amounts annually while simultaneously enhancing patient outcomes and staff morale. #CrisisStabilizationUnit #CrisisStabilizationNursing #NurseRetention #Dontwasteyourmoney #FiscalResponsibility #PositiveOutcomes #EnhancedCare #WarringtonSolutionsInc #NursingSolutions #ExecutiveNurseConsulting

The recently announced minimum staffing rule now requires 3 hrs and 48 minutes of direct patient care per patient, per day. The ruling also indicates 3.0 of those hours must be split between registered nurses at 2.45 hours and 0.55 hours for certified nurse aides. Where will this time come from amidst staffing challenges? 1 place is a reduction in non-direct patient care time. Hucu can deliver this, saving up to 2 hours per caregiver per shift of time wasted chasing information and communication.
