We often get asked about out-of-the-box vs custom when it comes to SharePoint intranets. The answer? It depends. Some organisations can achieve everything they need with OOTB features - and others need something bespoke to meet their people's needs. Some of the pros and cons we often find are... Out-of-the-box: ✔️ OOTB features are tested and supported by Microsoft, and will be aligned to future upgrades ✔️ SharePoint's OOTB features are compatible with other Microsoft 365 tools you're already using, like Viva and Teams ❌ You might not be able to meet all of your requirements using only OOTB - some of the functionality is limited ❌ It's unlikely you'll be able to replicate your branding and design guidelines, even with some of the new design features Custom: ✔️ Custom components can be tailored to meet your branding and design requirements, so your intranet can really embrace your organisation's identity ✔️ More opportunities to integrate with external systems, like HR platforms and CRMs ❌ Custom developments will need support to align with future Microsoft updates ❌ It's likely you'll need additional development skills and resources that you might not have in house Whichever route you go down, one thing is certain.
