Protective Effects of Intratympanic Dexamethasone on Radiation-Induced Middle Ear Mucosal Damage : The study investigated the effects of dexamethasone (DEX) administration prior to radiotherapy in rats, specifically examining its impact on the middle ear and Eustachian tube. The researchers found that DEX pretreatment significantly reduced radiation-induced damage to the middle ear cavity and Eustachian tube thickness at both 1 and 4 months post-radiation. The research included both in vivo and in vitro experiments, with cell studies showing DEX helped reduce radiation-induced cell death and mitochondrial stress in human middle ear epithelial cells. Minute in Medtech: A perspective from an aspiring biomedical engineer, competitive cyclist, CHD Warrior, and typical(?) Teen… "Minimally invasive isn’t minimal enough” This quote is part of the landing page for the company HistoSonics, Inc. If you scroll a little further, you can understand the reasoning behind the suffix “sonics”. Histosonics creates a device called the Edison Histotripsy System, which uses histotripsy to treat liver tumors from outside the body. Histotripsy is a high-amplitude ultrasound in short pulses that generates a “bubble cloud” meant to physically destroy the liver tumor. The device mounts directly over the body, allowing the clinician to see internally and then begin treatment. We currently have external radiation therapy, which can be used similarly to treat tumors all over the body. The issue with radiation is its general beam which can often harm healthy cells. Histotripsy treatment is a safer alternative, as it only breaks down defective cells into smaller pieces for the body to naturally eradicate. This approach is very modern. It’s hard to say how easily the Edison Histotripsy System can be employed in hospitals, as it can only treat liver cancer, and the machine itself takes up a large floor space. However, I can see how the added safety benefits and new technology could be appealing. Thanks for reading!
