Whenever someone talks about wind energy harvesting in transportation, as in this paper https://lnkd.in/ebWHcPUy, they also need to consider the impact on drag. Blocking airflow near a moving vehicle will raise its drag and energy consumption. Somewhat similar ideas such as using railroad right of way to build wind turbines can potentially work, as can building wind barriers that reduce dangerous and drag inducing crosswinds.

https://lnkd.in/g2frdYXr Vortex Bladeless is revolutionizing wind energy with a bladeless turbine Vortex Bladless’s redefining design operates by harvesting vortex-induced vibration. The structure features an obelisk design with a cylindrical mast that oscillates in wind currents. The air that flows around the turbine produces vortices that induce vibrations, which generate energy for converting into electricity via electromagnetic induction.

(archive: 2013) Why wind power does not deliver the expected emissions reductions: “It is frequently claimed, in the scientific or popular literature, that introduction of wind and other intermittent energy sources into utility and national electrical grids will substantially, if not completely, decrease CO₂ emissions from fossil fuel sources. While wind power certainly has desirable attributes, this paper, based on data from two continents and a variety of sources, suggests that as wind penetration increases, the CO₂ reduction will gradually decrease due to cycling of the fossil fuel plants that make up . . . #windpower #windenergy

As we shift towards #RenewableEnergy, wind farms are becoming crucial to our energy infrastructure. However, wind turbines are exposed to harsh environments including strong winds, temperature changes, waves and corrosive saltwater. #Fiber sensing technology can detect changes in strain and vibration, providing valuable data on the structural and operational health of turbines and cables. With this data, operators can identify potential issues and take a proactive approach to maintenance, preventing costly failures and reducing downtime. 📖 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗶𝗽: 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗪𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝗧𝘂𝗿𝗯𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 🌬 Wind turbines are affected by many different factors such as wind speed, grid load, and grid voltage. Testing them in a more controlled environment offers significant advantages. In the IEEE Spectrum article, our colleague Florian Hans talks about creating new laboratory testing methods for #windturbines that allow for more controlled variables and reproducible results.
