P-TECH 9-14 Pathways to Success
Implementation, Impact, and Cost Findings from the New York City P-TECH 9-14 Schools Evaluation
New findings in this report indicate that the P-TECH model increased students' postsecondary degree completion, particularly for male students, and boosted internship and dual enrollment rates, even during the pandemic.
"By the end of the first year of postsecondary education, 2.6 percent of female and 1.8 percent of male P-TECH 9-14 students had earned degrees, compared with virtually no students from the comparison group, of either gender. These impacts for both genders are statistically significant".
"Male students who had the chance to attend P-TECH 9-14 schools were more likely to attain college degrees than male students assigned to other kinds of schools".

It's both comforting and concerning to realize that many of the challenges we face in our communities are shared by others across the country. On one hand, it’s reassuring to know we’re not alone in confronting these issues. On the other, it can be frustrating to see recurring problems that impact our neighborhoods despite the diversity of locations and people.
But here's where the power of collaboration comes in. When we come together to share ideas, listen to different perspectives, and learn from the successes and challenges of others, we gain valuable insights. By engaging with thought leaders, community advocates, and innovators, we spark inspiration and gather fresh solutions that can be adapted to the unique needs of our own neighborhoods.
At the Neighborhood Design Center, we believe in the strength of community-driven change. Let's continue to come together, connect, and reimagine the possibilities for our neighborhoods.

The concept of the third place has always been about more than just the physical spaces we frequent to unwind, connect, and build community. Coined by sociologist Ray Oldenburg, third places are those informal gathering spots - cafés, parks, libraries, pubs - that provide a neutral ground for interaction, fostering a sense of belonging outside of home (first place) and work (second place). While Oldenburg’s vision remains relevant, the 21st century has seen a dramatic evolution in what constitutes a third place, thanks to the digital revolution, shifts in societal norms, and hybrid models of interaction.
In today’s world, third places are no longer confined to brick-and-mortar establishments. They coexist with digital platforms and hybrid environments that blur the lines between the physical and virtual. Here’s how these changes reflect the changing nature of how people connect and build community, offering a glimpse into the hybrid future of third places.

Designers and technology professionals coming together for truly innovative 3rd space venues is a huge opportunity for collaboration. This convergence of creativity and technological expertise can lead to the development of unique, functional, and immersive environments that redefine how we use communal spaces.
I've seen this topic come up in discussions many times and would love to hear your take on it! What are your thoughts on the potential and challenges of such collaborations?
Great quote from Annie Dean "third spaces where work, people, ideas, art + culture collide.”
Workplace + Business Transformation, Atlassian | Forbes Future of Work 50
The second space is declining in civic importance — we used to spend most of our time in offices, and it gave us our identity. How we dress, what we ate + who we saw was defined by where we worked.
A couple weeks ago I ran into a guy in New York City holding his laptop and a charger looking distressed. “This place doesn’t have internet, I can’t get on my call, do you know where I should go?” I didn’t have a great recommendation for him – “maybe try a hotel a lobby?”
We’re so focused on getting people to return to the second space, that we’re missing an opportunity to redesign our cities to meet an entirely new need: a new category of third spaces where work, people, ideas, art + culture collide.
In a world where work can happen anywhere, why do we have so few places to go?
Well deserved! Congrats!
