Ever wondered why your marketing campaigns aren’t performing as expected? I recently worked with a client in digital marketing who was doing a great job with their campaigns but was unsure about their effectiveness. They had a solid strategy, but they needed more clarity on what was really working. I took a deep dive into their data, analyzing website traffic, social media activity, ad performance, and conversion rates. What we found was quite insightful. One key finding was that their budget was mainly focused on social media platforms where their audience wasn’t very active. On the other hand, email marketing which had a higher engagement rate wasn’t receiving enough attention. By reallocating their budget to better match where their audience was engaging and setting up real-time performance tracking, we were able to make some impactful changes. The results were impressive. Within a few weeks, their engagement increased by 30%, and conversions saw a significant boost. It was great to see them get a strong return on their investment and gain a clearer understanding of their audience. This experience reminded me of the power of data analytics. It’s not just about numbers; it’s about turning those numbers into strategies that really make a difference. An 8 figure operator once told me on a call, “Attribution tools are a farce”. I laughed, agreed, and then we gelled over our distaste for fake marketing data lol. She’s right. Attribution was, is, and always will be, a farce. It’s 2025 now, and if you can’t escape attribution tools to guide your marketing and spend decisions then I hope your come to Jesus moment happens today. - Question: Why do you pay thousands a month to look at premium fake data when you can find free fake data in the ad platform? - Answer: Because you’re seeking peace of mind for your decisions rather than accepting you can’t measure everything. You’ll look high & low for the perfect attribution solution but it doesn't exist, and it never will. From here, you can walk 2 paths. 1. You continue to make trivial inaccurate decisions on ads like: "this one says we got 50 purchases, and this one says 70 so let's keep the higher one". 2. You triangulate the truth through data that (actually) is the truth, consider the business context, and make the best decisions possible. Data like: • Revenue • SKUs moved • OOS position & timeline • Contribution Margin • Profit • New Customers • Existing Customers • CVR • Impressions • Clicks • Adds To Cart • New Subscribers • LTV • AOV It’s easy to see that path 2 is better, but if you’re stuck moving away from attribution then start here: 1. Look outside the ad account. 2. Stop believing platform results as truth. 3. Intimately understand your P&L and its relationship to marketing efficiency and profit. 4. Check if the ads you’re cutting / scaling fill angle gaps or tie to business performance rather than adjusting based on 1 fake KPI. 5. Understand how each channel & tactic plays a role in your marketing mix and how it serves the consumer, not you. 6. Get a grip on your unit economics and toss the idea of top line growth (at all costs) straight out the window. #ecommerce
