The oceans contain enough kinetic energy to power the globe four times over, however wave and tidal energy does not feature in the current energy landscape. First onshore wave energy project in the US gets official nod The idea behind the setup is to mount a number of floaters on coastal infrastructure, which rise and fall to the motion of waves. This drives hydraulic pistons to move fluid to an accumulator, which is then released to produce electricity via a generator. #energy #technology #electricity https://flip.it/GA8h.I

Tidal energy is coming to Alaska. But how much? Much of Alaska is empty—of humans, at least. Vast tundra and forest separate cities and villages, dividing the state into more than 150 isolated power grids. The largest of these grids, known as the Railbelt, carries 70% of the state's electrical energy to about three-quarters of its population. Today, that grid runs mostly on natural gas. The Alaskan government is already discussing how to make these transmission upgrades. In the meantime, the NREL team will continue to examine the value of other marine energy resources—like ocean current energy in Florida and wave energy in Hawaii. Submissions for a Parliamentary Inquiry into the impact of Renewable Energy Zones (REZ) on rural and regional communities and industries in New South Wales are due on 31st January. I encourage those in my network, especially those based in the #Illawarra, to submit their reflections on opportunities, benefits and sustainable management of #renewableenergy projects in our region ☀️ 🍃 🌊 https://lnkd.in/gjKJCfGi #Solar and #wind technologies are viable, scalable alternatives to fossil fuels that are more affordable and less risky than other clean energy technologies like nuclear and hydrogen. There is potential for these to be supported by other renewable energy infrastructure such as batteries and pumped hydro to enable storage and ensure reliable production. It is critical we focus on these practical strategies for climate change mitigation rather than continue to entertain proposals that depend on future innovations and delay the transition to renewable energy.

This The New York Times article made my day! It does a great job of explaining how battery storage integrates renewable energy and reduces the need for fossil fuel power plants. 😁💡🌎 Kudos to Brad Plumer and Nadja Popovich for their excellent reporting, as well as Helen Kou at BloombergNEF, Andrés Gluski at The AES Corporation and Stephanie Smith at Eolian for providing their insight.

The UK is set to achieve a major milestone on Monday (30 September) with the closing of the nation’s final coal-fired power plant, Uniper’s 2,00MW Ratcliffe-on-Soar power station in Nottinghamshire. This means that from 1 October 2024, the UK will officially have 0% of coal-fired power in the electricity mix. This is a major milestone for the country, which is now firmly focused on developing a clean energy system by 2030. 👍 #UKcleanenergy
