I saw it again! It’s not rare but it is maddening! What am I talking about? A call for board members that says their commitment is just “2-3 hours per month”. First of all, it’s not. Full stop. It won’t be a full time role by any stretch but it’s far more than 2-3 hours per month if you want to do it right, that’s just the time at the board meetings! Second, do you want a group of people who who spend a mere 30 hours per year working on your organization to be the ones who ultimately approve budgets and not term goals? Nonprofit board members should be prepared for an average of 6-8 hours per month (with officers often putting in more). This includes: board meetings, committee meetings, reading packages and meeting preparation, ongoing training and development, strategy sessions, AGMs, fundraisers, and other key events that leaders/ambassadors should be around for. Don’t set your board up to fail, do not underestimate the time commitment for volunteers.

One of the big bonuses from the Central Washington Conference for the Greater Good is their Impact Report. Nancy Bacon always does magic with evaluation. A lot of times people go to the conference, enjoy themselves, and then forget what they learn. This report reminds people what they said they learned and highlights the value of such dedicated spaces for mutual learning. Thank you to all the sponsors. At the end of my keynote on the rubber band rule of respect, I polled the nonprofit conference participants. Here are some highlights from the results: ☑ Most people felt an "uncomfortable stretch" followed closely by "comfortable stretch" working in the nonprofit sector ☑ They ranked having to stretch the most for their peers then direct reports, the least for their donors ☑ Lack of using communication tools and lack of clarity from leadership ranked top 2 reasons for creating misalignment around respect Check out the report to see what the results were: https://lnkd.in/gcyCMcnz As a speaker, it can be difficult to gauge the impact of my presentation.
