Can the Excess Cardiovascular Risk Caused by Chronic Kidney Disease Be Canceled Out? J Am Coll Cardiol. 2024 Oct 1;84(14):1325-1327. DOI: 10.1016/j.jacc.2024.06.044 Clinicians should strive to achieve optimal control of SBP, LDL-C, and FBG to improve outcomes for patients with CKD. Future research should focus on confirming these findings in diverse populations and exploring the underlying mechanisms to enhance the management of CKD further Long-term studies are needed to confirm the sustained benefits of risk factor control over extended periods and across diverse populations.

ASCP Daily Diagnosis 08/02 CST Traces of non-essential and essential metals in urine were associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and all-cause mortality. While this is an ongoing field of study, high levels of essential metals in the urine can indicate an excess in exposure or loss of body reserves of these nutrients, which can occur when the metabolism is starting to malfunction, as it occurs in early stages of cardiovascular disease. https://lnkd.in/gT8WCbiG

The facts are sobering: two thirds of obesity-related excess mortality is attributable to cardiovascular disease (CVD). Get guidance on the clinical management of patients with cardiac disease and obesity – including weight-loss strategies – by using the ESC FOCUS resources for January. Focusing on the recent ESC clinical consensus statement on obesity and CVD, you’ll learn about the evidence and discover how you can contribute to bringing this near pandemic under control https://bit.ly/42aGI1K #obesity #cardiovascular

Nature: Association between chronic fatigue syndrome/myalgic encephalomyelitis and cardiovascular disease On 17 January 2025, Nature published a research paper titled, ‘Association between chronic fatigue syndrome/myalgic encephalomyelitis and cardiovascular disease.' "After adjusting for established cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors, our analysis showed a significant association between CFS/ME and CVD, demonstrating that CFS/ME may be an independent risk factor for CVD." Comment from Dr Charles Shepherd, Hon. Medical Adviser to the MEA: "This is not a subject that has attracted any serious research interest in the past. This new research study indicates that there is an increased risk." CHF is a big driver of healthcare spend , including ED visits/ hospitalizations. As a highly medication dependent disease, Optum Health implemented a pharmacist led CHF (and COPD) program to optimize outcomes. Uncontrolled hypertension is a common cause of CHF, which is usually a result of either non-adherence or resistant hypertension. The latter is a huge unmet need, and data from AstraZeneca on their new agent seems promising! #chronicheartfailure #healthcareutilization #healthcareinnovation #medicationmanagement #populationhealth #valuebasedcare

The Ankle Brachial Index (ABI Test) is an important way to diagnose peripheral vascular disease. The index compares the systolic blood pressures of the arms and legs to give a ratio that can suggest various severity of peripheral vascular disease. It has been shown to be a specific and sensitive metric for the diagnosis of Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD). Additionally, the ABI has been shown to predict mortality and adverse cardiovascular events independent of traditional CV risk factors. The major cardiovascular societies advise measuring an ABI in every smoker over 50 years old, every diabetic over 50, and all patients over 70. See Stanford Medicine 25's guide to the ABI Test here: https://lnkd.in/eTm4M_UX #S25ClinicalSkills

A new study from Harvard Medical School researchers found that nearly 90% of U.S. adults were at risk of developing cardiovascular, kidney and metabolic (CKM) syndrome between 2011 and 2020 – and 15% met criteria for advanced stages. The term “CKM syndrome” was introduced by the American Heart Association as a new staging system to better treat and manage a range of conditions (including heart and kidney diseases, diabetes and #obesity) that are interrelated and often require a multidisciplinary approach. These new findings were published in JAMA last week and come in the midst of #HighBloodPressureMonth. High blood pressure, or #hypertension, is a leading cause and controllable risk factor for many of the conditions implicated in CKM syndrome that affects nearly one in two adults in the U.S. – and statistics show that up to 50% remain uncontrolled. As the U.S. continues to fall behind other high-income countries in chronic-disease mortality and morbidity, the public health need to adequately control blood pressure rates is clear and highlights an urgent need for new, innovative treatment approaches. #KidneyDisease #CVD #CardioRenalMetabolic

Shedding Light on Cardiovascular Health: The Role of oxLDL Cardiovascular disease remains a leading health challenge worldwide, and early detection is key to effective prevention. One important biomarker in cardiovascular health is oxidized LDL (oxLDL), a critical indicator linked to the development of atherosclerosis and other cardiovascular conditions. 🔬 Why is oxLDL important? Oxidized LDL is a byproduct of low-density lipoproteins (LDL) that have undergone oxidative stress. Elevated levels of oxLDL show valuable insights for assessing cardiovascular health. 💡 Key Takeaway: Monitoring oxLDL levels can help offer a pathway to cardiovascular care. 👉 Learn how Diazyme can support your diagnostic goals. https://lnkd.in/gVudnCGx #CardiovascularHealth #Diagnostics #oxLDL #EarlyDetection #Prevention #LifeSciences #HeartHealth
