📢 𝐔𝐒𝐀𝐈𝐃’𝐬 90-𝐃𝐚𝐲 𝐅𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐅𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐳𝐞: 𝐀 𝐌𝐚𝐣𝐨𝐫 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐫𝐮𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐇𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐀𝐢𝐝 🚩The recent 90-day freeze on USAID funding, triggered by the Executive Order on 𝑹𝒆𝒆𝒗𝒂𝒍𝒖𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑹𝒆𝒂𝒍𝒊𝒈𝒏𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑼.𝑺. 𝑭𝒐𝒓𝒆𝒊𝒈𝒏 𝑨𝒊𝒅 has taken the entire humanitarian and international development sector by surprise. 🚩This abrupt decision raises serious concerns about its far-reaching impact on vulnerable communities, particularly in conflict zones and crisis-affected regions. 🚩With many UN agencies and key international organizations forced to scale back or suspend programs, the consequences are severe—disrupting essential aid and services for those who need them most. From food security and healthcare to education and economic recovery, the ripple effects of this funding freeze are being felt worldwide. 🔴As professionals in the sector, we must push for stable and predictable funding mechanisms to ensure humanitarian and development efforts are not jeopardized by sudden policy shifts. #USAID #HumanitarianAid #Development #FundingFreeze #GlobalImpact #CrisisResponse

🚨 New Publication Alert! 🚨 I'm excited to share this new report I wrote in collaboration with Maysoon Dahab and Melissa Parker: "Key considerations: Mutual aid lessons and experiences from Emergency Response Rooms in Sudan" 🇸🇩. 📌 This publication draws on a case study exploring the experiences of volunteers working with grassroots-led Emergency Response Rooms (ERRs) in Sudan. It highlights how these local networks of volunteer responders mobilise to address the urgent needs of those affected by the ongoing conflict. 💻 Access the full document in the post below & let's continue the conversation on meaningful localisation and mutual aid in war-affected settings 💬.
Strategic and research communication. Keen to bring political thinking to research, practice, policy and communication for better health.
We have a new brief drawing insights from grassroots movements for mutual aid and assistance during the civil war in Sudan. 👇 📖 Lessons from mutual #aid in Sudan. The experiences from Emergency Response Rooms. The civil #war in the Republic of #Sudan, which began in April 2023, has fuelled and exacerbated a severe #humanitarian crisis. As of September 2024, over 25 million people – half the country’s population – need assistance. 📲 In response, #grassroots movements have emerged, drawing on past experiences of collective mobilisation. Volunteer networks, known as #Emergency Response Rooms (ERRs), in which the ‘room’ refers to the online group chats where they were originally conceived and planned, are one example. This SSHAP brief aims to describe key considerations for understanding ERRs and how they might be supported. The brief also explores the implications of meaningful and locally impactful partnerships with national and international humanitarian and #development actors (IHDAs). ✍ The brief has been written for all actors following or engaged in the Sudan response – local, national and international. It was prepared by Samantha Olson, Maysoon Dahab and Melissa Parker London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, U. of London. 🔽 https://lnkd.in/eGd8YZAH

The Association vivre au Sahel was born in 2012 from the conviction of a number of people of good will who realized that the situation of our society in terms of development, adaptation to climate change and the fight against poverty required the mobilization of everyone. This situation is aggravated by the disruption as well as the loss of the values that govern our society, leading to the proliferation of criminal groups (drug traffickers, terrorists, banditry etc.) threatening civil peace in Mali. AVS, which became an NGO in 2016, has as its main mission: Strengthening the protection and resilience of populations affected by crises and climate change in Mali. The NGO AVS works in three areas: protection, the environment and food security. It has a dozen projects in Mali, notably in the north of the country in Timbuktu and Taoudenni. In terms of figures, the NGO AVS has reached 30,000 people through its projects, 50 communes in Mali and 70 villages in northern Mali. The NGO AVS works with several donors, including UNICEF, ACTED, the Malian government, the US embassy in Mali, the CRS...

A brilliant few days spent with a great group exploring points of interaction and linkages between the nexus (humanitarian/development/peace) and systems strengthening. I enjoyed the conversations we had which open up new avenues for collaboration and partnership for WASH systems strengthening. Bringing about systems change requires thinking beyond immediate boundaries and boxes, but there are many preconditions needed to make a holistic approach the reality. Agenda for Change #systemschange #collaboration #nexus
Sandec’s Christoph Luthi, Dr. George Wainaina and Philippe Reymond are participating in the 38th AGUASAN workshop in Meielisalp, Switzerland. The focus is the WASH humanitarian-development nexus, the bridging of emergency humanitarian aid and longer-term development assistance. The 30 participants are from Ministries, local authorities, NGOs and academia and are here to share and learn from experiences from around the world. #Eawag Eawag #Aguasan #WASH #humanitariandevelopment

Our latest edition of The AIDN Beat went live last week 🌎 The AIDN Beat is an inclusive space for thought leadership pieces that explore the complexities, trends, and future of the Australian international development sector. We also include a selection of curated, recent articles from the international development sector, and a longer reading recommendation for our subscribers. In our latest edition, we were thrilled to feature a piece from Tamar Kosky Lazarus - Chief Development and Communications Officer at IsraAID. In the piece, Tamar reflects upon a recent visit to two Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps in Juba, South Sudan. On one hand, the devastating situation in the camps reinforced for Tamar that the humanitarian community must do better to support these protracted crises. On the other hand, Tamar highlights one women-led community group in Lemon Gaba that has continued to demonstrate incredible resilience despite these circumstances. The experience reiterated that for any development program to be sustainable: 👉 it must be community-led; 👉 it must be given the time and space to flourish under local leadership; and 👉 it must actively work to ensure that long-term, external dependencies are not created. The session will first offer a presentation of lessons on scaling up humanitarian responses from the IASC learning paper, as well as key lessons from recent IAHEs on Afghanistan and Ethiopia. Then a panel of specialists from different agencies will share their learning and perspectives on key issues related to scale-up and prioritisation. Useful for humanitarian policy makers & practitioners who are interested in issues related to system-wide scale-up and humanitarian aid in complex crises 🗓 Today 🕚 11:00-12:30PM CET 🔗 https://lnkd.in/g-8iayGZ
