The Business of Events Policy Agenda - objective 1 📊 Revamping SIC Codes for Accurate Industry Representation 📊 The business events industry, encompassing conferences, meetings, exhibitions, and trade shows, plays a vital role in driving the UK economy. However, the current Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) codes do not accurately reflect the diverse and dynamic nature of our industry. 🛠️ Why this matters: 1. Accurate data collection: Updated SIC codes will ensure better data collection, allowing for more precise economic analysis and policy-making. 2. Targeted support: With accurate classification, the industry can receive more targeted support and funding, enhancing growth and innovation. 3. Visibility and recognition: Properly categorised, the industry will gain the visibility it deserves, highlighting its contributions to economic growth and employment. 🏛️ Call to action: We recommend the UK Government collaborates with industry leaders to update the SIC codes, reflecting the true scope and impact of the business events sector. Let's work together to ensure our industry gets the recognition and support it deserves. 👥Followers: share your views and comments #BusinessEvents #UKGovernment #SICCodes #PolicyInitiative #EconomicGrowth #IndustrySupport #UKElection2024

Standardised Industrial Classification (SIC) codes, as we call them in the UK, are the means by which a Government can measure the scale of an industry. Anyone who has read my copy over the years will know that I believe that the codes must be updated to better reflect the true scale of the Events Industry. The codes aren't a silver bullet by any means, but provide foundation level data for which to evidence to Government the value of our sector. Without sufficient codes, we are banking on good faith and PR. In the meantime, our conference, meetings, exhibitions, and other event value is being subsumed by other identifiable (albeit often related) sectors, such as hospitality, tourism, and administration services. However, the UK's SIC code system is simply a regional deviation from the UN's ISIC system, managed by the UN Statistics Division. If we are to effect change, then we must lobby the UN to expand the code classes to better represent the scale and depth of the industry. To get us started, our last act in 2024 is the publication of a new White Paper: ISIC Codes and the Global Events Economy. Everything you need to know is in here, including some suggested meantime solutions. Download, read, advocate: https://lnkd.in/gDtsRsRT That's me done for the year, signing off. BFSLA conference session update: Tokenising financial and investment assets: is it a thing? Chair Paul Richter, ANZ and joined by speakers Anton Didenko, UNSW and Urszula McCormack, King & Wood Mallesons. Art works can be represented by non-fungible tokens (NFTs) – but so can financial and investment assets such as bonds, loans, shares and even carbon credits. Why might financial institutions be interested in tokenisation? How do tokenised assets fit within the existing legal and financial regulatory framework, and what does that mean for transactions? Using a case study approach, this session will explore key regulatory and transaction considerations when dealing with tokenised assets, including financial services law implications, challenges with taking security and more. The IOR is not the professional institute I once believed it to be and loved being a part of. Conversations held with other members recently indicate a lot of them are also unhappy with the current direction of travel and behaviour of certain people. Given that there is an AGM coming up and that any other business for the agenda needs to be announced in advance I’m proposing the following votes be made available to the members: 1. The members have no confidence in the CEO to take the Institute forward. 2. The members have no confidence in the President Elect to lead the Institute in a professional manner. It is clear that the members are not happy with the way our President Elect has behaved. It is also clear that the members are not happy with the way the chief executive has behaved. A failure of the board to allow these votes of confidence to take place will demonstrate very clearly that they have no leadership ability and will only serve to further weaken their position in the eyes of the members and damage the reputation of the IOR as a whole. I feel the CEO and President Elect now need these votes to give them legitimacy. If they lose please note I do not make this move for myself, I have done my time - but I will happily propose and support other, more suitable, candidates for these roles. I have noted that although I have the private communications agreeing to hold the online AGM in October, and the events page on the website no longer says it will be held in person on 5th November, that no official notice of this has been given to the members. Maybe the duplicitous CEO is backtracking on the sly online AGM move and feels the constitution change is no longer needed now I’ve walked away? I’m happy to publish the meeting notes to highlight the level of intimidation I was subjected to - so the members all see for themselves how disgracefully the CEO and certain trustees behaved. I would welcome thoughts from members of the Institute of Refrigeration UK who deserve to know the truth about how they are being represented.
