We are delighted to announce that Aaltosiilo Ry has officially joined the NEBA: New European Bauhaus Initiative as partner – one of the six in Finland and the only one in northern part of the country as of December 2024.   The New European Bauhaus, launched by the European Commission, envisions a future where sustainability, inclusivity, and aesthetics come together to inspire innovative solutions for our built environment. Joining this vibrant network allows Aaltosiilo Ry to collaborate with like-minded organisations and strengthens our commitment to ensure the preservation of Alvar and Aino Aalto’s woodchip silo in Oulu and its transformation into a hub for interdisciplinary collaboration, sustainability, and cultural engagement.   Central to the AaltoSiilo project is the use of art to reinvent industrial cultural heritage and the introduction by Skene Catling de la Peña and Factum Foundation of a new way of reusing reclaimed concrete demolition ‘waste’ to reduce carbon emissions during the restoration project of the Silo. The Aaltosiilo is a core legacy project for Oulu, European City of Culture, 2026 and was recently chosen by the European Commission as an example of excellence in architecture as part of the Living Spaces peer-learning programme.   The first renovation phase of the Silo, overseen by LTM Rakennus Oy and Snowhow Oy, started in November 2024 and is nearing completion, with significant milestones achieved over the past weeks. The aim is to repurpose the historical site while preserving its architectural heritage. The metal hoppers are being disassembled and removed in collaboration with VP Purkku Oy, and the ground floor's wood structures have been dismantled. We would like to thank Hauru Oy for their help in the waste management, especially in handling the disposal of hazardous and toxic materials.   We look forward to participating in this journey of innovation and sharing our ideas and projects with the NEB community.

IF YOU SAVE ONE OLD BUILDING,  YOU’LL GET MORE THAN YOU EXPECTED Today, the Re-team is at the head of the modern agenda: Reconstruction, restoration, renovation, revitalization. Each has its nuances, which will not fit into one post. But what unites all four approaches: is respect for heritage. Why is it important today? The past seems like an event that once happened years ago and it remained on the pages of history. But architecture is material, so this past continues to live now. At the same time with the present and future, which is still only in plans. In this way, the city becomes multi-layered, accumulating memory and showing us what happened and will happen to us right in front of us. Is it possible to gain from this for development and not be limited to new construction? Definitely. What we will tell you about the example of a project that we work with:  Reconstruction of the historical brewery in Poland, which entailed  the creation of an entire quarter.

“Buildings that are classified as historic monuments and were built before 1900 are not subject to demolition. What about this? How can we use such facilities? They can be perfectly adapted and constitute added value,” said our colleague Rafał Przybył, regional manager of Vastint Poland, participating as a panelist in the PRES Polish Real Estate Summit 2024 conference in Zakopane. According to Rafał, “an old, dilapidated building can, for example, be built into a new hall. Combining classics with modernity is one of the solutions.” Rafał knows perfectly well what he is talking about, because in addition to leading the revitalization project of the Stara Rzeźnia in Miasto Poznań, he has in his portfolio – from the time before he started working at Vastint Poland – a very successful, award-winning revitalization of another Poznań icon of post-industrial architecture – Stary Browar. This was the fourth edition of this conference focusing on the hottest issues of the residential and office market and those sections of Polish real estate that escape traditional categorization. The conference provided many opportunities to exchange opinions and establish valuable business contacts. Design can be fun AND functional!

💡The "House of the Good Shepherd" in Bratislava is an excellent example of Rococo architecture.💡 In the 18th century, when this house was built, Bratislava (then still Prešporok) was a densely built-up city, especially in the area under the castle. Urban land was very expensive and limited in this area, so every bit of available space had to be used efficiently. Some cities, including Bratislava, had rules and taxes that were calculated according to the width of the facade facing the street. Therefore, houses were built as close as possible to each other and often had very narrow floor plans to fit between existing buildings. Building narrow houses was more advantageous from a tax point of view, and this kind of thinking was common in many European cities at the time. This house is interesting because it reflects the mentality and needs of people in the past. People had to be creative in how to make efficient use of limited urban land if they wanted to live in a given location. The house is a living example of how architecture can respond to the economic and practical challenges of its time, while maintaining aesthetic value and historical significance. Its importance lies mainly in its architectural value, because it is one of the best preserved Rococo buildings not only in Bratislava, but in the whole of Central Europe. However, it became significant only later, thanks to its uniqueness and preservation, which makes it a symbol of the old castle of Bratislava. And one more thing... The name "House of the Good Shepherd" was not given by chance, but thanks to the statue on its facade (shepherd carrying a sheep) that became a characteristic feature of this building. Tyskie Brewery Książęce. State-of-the-art lighting technology for a 400-year-old building. How do you combine the highest technical standards for industrial lighting with the preservation of a building’s historic architecture and significance? This was the unique challenge faced by TRILUX Poland’s experts during a four-year project to modernize the lighting at the 17th century Kompania Piwowarska princely brewery in Tychy, Poland. The site, a thriving distribution hub, is also an important industrial monument, featured on the Route of Industrial Monuments in the Silesian Voivodeship and the European Route of Industrial Heritage (ERIH).
