Obscure reasons cars failed their MOT last year 👇 Last year, almost 10 million vehicles failed their annual MOT which was more than a fifth of all tests carried out. You'd be correct in thinking the most popular reasons were wheels, tyres & suspension, lights, brakes, visibility and body, structure or attachments. But, here's a list of the most obscure and frankly scary fails. 😅 🚨 𝐍𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐭 𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐜 𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠!!!!!!! (𝟑𝟏 𝐭𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐬) 🚗 Steering lock inadvertently engaging (64 tests) 🛞 Spare wheel likely to become detached (186 tests) ⚠️ Bonnet seriously at risk of opening inadvertently (1,667 tests) 💨 Exhaust emits excessive smoke or vapour likely to obscure the vision of other road users (6,043 tests) In all, 848 vehicles took 6 or more tests to pass, with the highest amount needed for a successful test being 11 attempts! TO BUTTRESS The recommended tire pressure for a vehicle depends on the type and size of the vehicle, as well as the load it's carrying: Small cars: Typically 30–35 pounds per square inch (PSI) for sedans and hatchbacks Medium-sized vehicles: Usually 35–40 PSI for SUVs and crossovers Large vehicles: Often over 45 PSI for utes, vans, trucks, and 4x4s Heavier loads: The more weight the vehicle is carrying, the higher the recommended tire pressure You can find the recommended tire pressure for your vehicle in a few places: ✳️On a sticker on the driver's side door jamb ✳️On the rear edge of the driver's side door ✳️In the glove box ✳️On the inside of the fuel-filler door ✳️In the vehicle's owner's manual To check the tire pressure, you can use a tire pressure gauge: Remove the dust cap from the tire valve Place the gauge on the valve Gently push the gauge down until you get a reading Check the reading and adjust the pressure if needed Repeat for all four tires It's important to check your tire pressure regularly, at least once a month or before long trips. You should also make sure your tires are cold before checking the pressure.
