Amid all the talk about supply chain woes, here's some positive news: Unum has the capacity to deliver premium aircraft seating solutions, now! 💺 It’s been well documented that capacity in the sector is now at a breaking point. Seat industry consolidation, coupled with major cabin upgrade programmes amongst the biggest airlines, mean that operators with smaller fleets get ignored. The solution? The industry must expand and adopt local and agile supply chains, and make the most of the high-tech manufacturing ecosystems. Smaller suppliers can pivot quicker to short notice requests or smaller requirements without skipping a beat. Sound familiar? Our CEO, Chris Brady discusses the challenges sitting within the current supply chain battlefield in the latest Inflight issue. **Understanding How an Airplane Generates Revenue** Airplanes are not just feats of engineering; they are also intricate business assets designed to maximize profitability. Revenue generation for airlines hinges on several key factors: passenger ticket sales, cargo transport, and ancillary services such as in-flight purchases and loyalty programs. Effective route management, optimizing load factors, and strategic alliances further enhance profitability. Southwest Airlines has revised its 2025 delivery schedule, cutting back its Boeing 737 MAX order from 86 to 73 aircraft. The reduction follows a series of setbacks at Boeing, including a machinists’ strike and lingering production challenges. Southwest CEO Bob Jordan highlighted that the airline will receive only 20 new aircraft in 2024, well below the initially expected 80-plus deliveries. This shortfall has forced the airline to re-evaluate staffing levels, offering voluntary buyouts and extended leaves of absence to airport workers. Boeing’s production troubles also include delays in certifying the 737 MAX 7 and MAX 10 models due to engine anti-ice system design issues. While Boeing has identified a solution, the implementation is expected to push into mid-2025. These delays have not only disrupted fleet expansion for Southwest but also pose broader challenges for the airline industry as carriers scramble to adapt their operational strategies.

Some interesting commercial aviation and aircraft leasing trend & forecast metrics by Alton Aviation Consultancy; 1️⃣ The new aircraft order backlog from OEMs represents a massive ~50% of the current in-service fleet. 2️⃣ Current fleet of 31,200 projected to grow to 41,100 by 2034 (2.8% annual growth). 3️⃣ The substantial order backlog coupled with strong aircraft demand means lessors keep mid- and mature-life aircraft flying longer, as Alton notes lessor aircraft retirements now average ~300 per year versus ~400 pre-pandemic. With higher demand, extended aircraft lease life-cycles, and more mid-mature aircraft being (re)leased, it is imperative aircraft lessors stay on top of asset, contract, and maintenance reserves management / forecasting to protect asset values, and therefore eventual part-out / trading potential. V1 Aviation Asset Management LLC offers lessors asset & contract management, and technical / MR forecasting coverage when required - please get in touch to see how we can help protect your fleet! ✈️
Alton Aviation Consultancy recently completed its 10-year commercial aircraft fleet forecast. Notwithstanding the ongoing supply chain challenges impacting Original Equipment Manufacturers’ (OEM) production rates, Alton forecasts a steady 2.8% commercial aircraft fleet annual growth rate over the coming decade.
