💭 Have you ever stopped to wonder: Am I truly practicing empathy in UX, or just sympathy? This question has been on my mind ever since I attended Yousef Shehabi session on "The Role of Empathy in UX Design". It made me realize that what often passes as "empathy" in UX can sometimes be just a distant acknowledgement of user struggles, rather than truly understanding and experiencing them. Sympathy is recognizing that users have challenges. Empathy, though? It’s feeling those challenges yourself, immersing deeply enough to design solutions that genuinely improve lives. For example, instead of saying, “Using a mouse might be hard for some users,” empathy says, “Let’s try it with gloves on and really see what it’s like.” Inspired by Youssef’s session, I decided to dig deeper and share my thoughts. In my article, I explore how empathy in UX goes beyond acknowledging pain points to creating meaningful, impactful solutions that resonate with users. Let’s turn “empathy” into more than a buzzword.
