Pre-publication tasks for my political satire, A Politician’s Epiphany, are gradually being ticked off. The manuscript has been through the proof reader and I am close to deciding on a cover – my favourite is at the end of this post. My fictious tale is a crack at professional politicians’ quest for power and how all types of ordinary folk see through these shenanigans. The book is definitely not a slight on those parliamentarians who are committed to first and foremost serving those in their electorates. Such individuals exist and are 100% value-add propositions that should be placed on a pedestal – and some of these prized individuals even represent major parties! Rather, the book is a satirical dig at two entirely different groups making up our political food chain. The first group comprises all the self-serving sitting parliamentarians out there (and those wanting their spots!) The second group is the cabal of individuals meddling in candidate selection processes – the so-called ‘faceless men’. Jaqui Lane Lel Smits GAICD ' Julia Maguire

Interview highlights: 1) The current crop of dynastic politicians benefits directly from the broken system. So we can’t expect them to kill the goose that lays the golden egg for them. 2) Instead of pandering, media should challenge the candidate to demonstrate a readiness to fulfill the office being sought. For example, a candidate for the senate should present and explain a legislative agenda. https://lnkd.in/gQbUfG4b

Happy Constitution Day! It’s a great day to reflect on a document that is not often read but readily quoted (and mis-quoted); one that is foundational to our country. The full text is here: https://lnkd.in/g6ZqzYtw (The Constitution of the United States | Congress.gov). Each time I read them, I’m especially struck by the first three words of the Preamble. They’re not about the government, or the rich, or the well-educated, or the powerful, but simply We The People — now, all 333 million of us. (If you only have a few minutes today, you might just ponder the Preamble, and reflect on the individual — and shared — challenges, and hope, it poses and inspires). You can explore further these principles and values — put into writing and ratified some 236 years ago, amended only 27 times, and still standing the test of time — by checking out the resources of the National Constitution Center:
