Supply Chain Resiliency So we have been talking about Supply Chain Resiliency for some time now. But many organizations are wondering where to start and how define any KPI related to it. Prof David Simchi Levi has done remarkable work in this field and have actually developed a technology product which can be used to measure, manage and strategize the supply chain resiliency. Here is one of the many videos available on Youtube : https://lnkd.in/dqq_SeST. Few surprising insights from one of the work he has done with a large automotive company: If we have to ask procurement or any other person about on which supplier we should focus, the typical answer would be Strategic suppliers i.e. the suppliers from whom we buy a lot. But in their project work it was shown that yes strategic suppliers do poses risk but at medium level because mostly they have redundant capacities or multiple sites. But it is smaller supplier providing bottleneck critical components who poses biggest risk as they may not necessarily have sufficient capacity and most like there is no substitute for the item you are procuring It is not necessary that by outsourcing to far away countries like China, India increases the risk. Quite to the contrary it is highly possible it is the domestic supplier who poses the bigger risks if any disruption occurs in their plants Few KPIs: Time to recovery: Since the start of the disruption how much time it takes to recover to original or normal position Time to survive: how long can you manage the demand if a disruption occurs with one node of your supply chain Time to recover supply chain: This is about the whole supply chain. That is the time it takes to come to original target inventory level in the supply chain Performance Indicators: The operational or financial performance that gets impacts during and after the disruption Even 10 a day disruption may need more than a year to recover to the normal inventory level. This is highly possible if you are running at high utilization and high demand One of the solution implemented by this leading automotive company was to standardize the material so that it can be used across multiple vehicle models and thus increase the volume to justify investing in additional plant sites and also justify dual sourcing.
