If only this was a pier full of Software Developers in San Francisco lining up to speak to me about working in early stage startups..... 🤗 This is one of my favourite spots from my trip to San Francisco last September (if you hold your nose slightly and no, I am not saying that software developers look or smell like sealions!). I can see why there are so many startups launching in the city, it certainly feels like a hub of software activity. I am working with founders from really innovative startups who are looking to hire senior engineers, very often "founding" engineers with a chance to influence the tech and product early on. ✅Developer Tools - building out a new in-person team in SF, utilising AI to enable developer productivity through automating software maintenance ✅Developer Tools - building out the most awesome tool for dev focused software companies to ensure they have the best public facing documentation, easy to use, easy to manage ✅Changing the future of freight - automating backend tasks to enable freight companies to move faster Just a small selection of some of the roles we are working on, where you will play a crucial role in the team from an early stage and get to spend your days helping to build an in person culture. On offer, base salary levels up to $250k plus equity Drop me a message to find out more

Before you hire your dedicated software development team for a startup, make sure you don’t make the most often mistakes made by others: • Your vision about what kind of software developers you need needs to be clearer. Before searching for a dedicated development team, define your project requirements first. To do it, you will need more than just good language knowledge. You have to describe every phase of your project to avoid ending up with colossal time and money waste. • You need to figure out where to look for the right people. The most important thing while looking for software developers is to avoid trusting an inexperienced software company with a dedicated development team who may only have fundamental development knowledge. It may cause a significant financial loss for you. • You need to learn how to hire a dedicated development team for a startup. You have to find a trustworthy source for hiring to avoid trouble. If the hiring process goes in the wrong direction, it can be more time-consuming and increase the risk of missing requirements. To hire dedicated software developers for a startup, you need an evident vision of recruits’ value to your startup. Be careful because a startup hiring not always can afford the work of software developers qualified for the job, whether outsourced or not. The most important question you must answer is – what kind of project will your dedicated software development team build? Remember that agile software development is not a one-person job. Mostly you will need a dedicated software development team, not just one very qualified person. There are different types of software developers: backend, front-end, middle-tier, full-stack, desktop, web, mobile, and so on. You need to know the stages of team development and clearly define your task’s job description, profile, and requirements beforehand. Failure to communicate context is a bi-directional problem. ⇄ Leadership fails to communicate business impact to people doing the work. Workers fail to communicate ground-truth reality and nuance back to leadership. The reasons are varied and particular to each enterprise. A couple that stand out to me: - Information is power. As a leader, don't horde it. Providing richer context to your creative workers enables them to make more nuanced decisions. - Telling your boss they're wrong is hard. Foster an open culture where inconvenient truths are addressed and acted upon. Align your organization incentives and processes away from blame towards future improvement.
Developers who work in big tech are no more capable than those who work outside of big tech... But one thing working at big tech does teach you is the business impact and value of what it is you're doing. (This isn't limited to big tech before you @ me) BUT!... I've seen companies want to 'protect' their developers from this information, thinking they are doing us a 'favour' by shielding us. But all it does is: 1. Remove accountability within the development team, leading to a culture of blame. 2. Limit the developer's understanding of the bigger picture, leading to decisions that may not align with business goals. 3. Reduces innovation, as developers lack the context to propose impactful solutions. 4. Create a disconnect between technical work and its real-world outcomes, reducing motivation and job satisfaction. When developers are empowered with business context... They not only write better code but also become key contributors to the company's success as well as get more experience understanding how businesses work. Ignoring this connection is a missed opportunity for growth, both for the developer and the organisation. Have you seen this happen in your organisation?

Software Engineers are NOT hired to write code. Software Engineers are hired to build software that will make a company MONEY. It’s that simple. If you ever forget that, check how much investment your startup received recently. Software Engineers are one of MANY parts of building a business - stop focusing so much on the code itself, consider the bigger picture.

The Changing Tech Market: What It Means for Software Developers 💻📉 The U.S. tech industry is facing major changes, with economic uncertainty leading to layoffs and a shift in priorities. As software developers, it’s a wake-up call to rethink how we approach our careers and the skills we bring to the table. Here’s how these changes are impacting software development: 🔄 Shifting Focus: Companies are pivoting from hyper-growth to sustainable operations, meaning efficiency, scalability, and cost-effectiveness are now top priorities in software engineering. ⚙️ Automation and AI: As automation grows, developers must adapt to working alongside tools that can optimize coding, testing, and deployment. The role of a developer is evolving—less about routine coding, more about problem-solving and system design. 💼 Fewer Resources, Bigger Challenges: With leaner teams, developers are expected to wear multiple hats—working across the stack, solving infrastructure challenges, and even contributing to product decisions. 🏗️ The Rise of Technical Debt: Layoffs and tighter deadlines often lead to rushed decisions, leaving behind technical debt. The ability to navigate and clean up that debt will be a critical skill. This is a challenging time for many developers, but it’s also an opportunity to: ✅ Build skills in DevOps, AI integration, and scalable architectures. ✅ Contribute beyond code—understand business needs and align with strategic goals. ✅ Adapt to the “efficiency-first” mindset by focusing on maintainable and impactful solutions. These market shifts remind us that adaptability and continuous learning are key in this field. As software developers, we don’t just write code—we drive innovation, even in tough times. How are you adjusting your development practices to meet these new market demands? Let’s share ideas. #SoftwareDevelopment #TechLayoffs #EngineeringResilience #MarketTrends #AI #DevOps #TechnicalDebt #GrowthMindset #Scalability #EngineeringExcellence
