To ease a growing talent crunch, employers are taking a closer look further down the workforce pipeline, starting in schools.Companies like JPMorgan Chase have partnered with educators in efforts to bridge skills gaps. The banking giant joined forces with the Greater Washington Partnership and the Education Strategy Group to support K-12 technology education in November. JPMorgan Chase committed $5.3 million to the joint TalentReady initiative over the next three years. The GWP, an alliance of around 35 employers across industries clustered around the Baltimore and Richmond, Virginia, areas, works with regional school districts to provide career pathways and work-based learning. It is not just the technological skills required but also business analysis, accounting, and overall financial reporting concepts. It is hard to build models unless you thoroughly understand the data management strategy for an organization! J.P. #SIF2024 Day 1 reflections ... As promised, here's my takeaways from the first day at the Skillman.eu Network international conference. Similar to the conclusions from last month's #OpenEpic event in Paris, and as noted in Canada West Foundation's Future of Work and Learning brief (https://bit.ly/3DdSlKP )last week: our current systems for developing and credentialing workforce talent aren't fit for purpose in a VUCA world. One really interesting concept presented by Urs Hauenstein was that in the future, credentialing/recognition needs to be "I-H-I-T" - International, Humanistic, Individualized, and Transformative. Achieving this will mean disruption, with multiple pathways to learning and credentialling, far greater involvement of industry/employers in the learning and recognition value stream, and leveraging digital technologies (Open Badges, etc). And, according to Giovanni Crisonà we are moving away from "skills as a commodity" to a "skills as a service" paradigm, and from "frame-based recognition" with limited (and generally institutional) recognition authorities to "universal competency validation and recognition" with multiple actors, pathways, verifiers etc... all secured via linked networks and blockchain. The European "Digital Qualification Framework" (DQF) which is built on the EBSI blockchain, has the potential to serve as an international standard in this regard, since the EU already manages to handle learning and credentialling equivalencies across 27 sovereign nations. (Also across 24 official languages. And for about 450 million people. And thousands of discrete learning institutions...) There's also a lot of progress on taming the "wild west" of digital badges by putting in place better quality standards/criteria that will help clean up the "noise" created by multiple independent badges/micro-credentials/"insert latest cool new thing here"... which frankly is one of the reasons that employers still lean on flawed skill proxies like diplomas and degrees. Good news is... we're approaching a technological stage where a lot of this can be cleaned up... if we embrace it. The challenge we face in Canada is getting off the sidelines and aggressively adopting new approaches that make us better able to adapt on the fly to an unpredictable future. To paraphrase something that someone much wiser than me once said: "...the thing about the future is it's gonna happen whether you're ready for it or not". #openbadges #openlearning #opencredentialing #talent

Why are we encouraging investment in more costly training tools? Because the world of work is advancing in the skills, experience, and tools used in the workplace. In the #AAC&U Digital Equity Capstone training session for today, it was made quite clear that #learners of all ages need to be equipped to function in the evolving environments being impacted by #AI innovation. If your idea of digital literacy is using a device to access the internet, you are stuck in digital literacy 1.0. #AdultEducation needs investment in the future so those we serve can be equipped for the thriving opportunity future for themselves and their children. #ElevateDigitalEquity #MoveAheadWithAdultEd #DigitalLiteracy
