Kicking off 2025 with a bang. It’s great to see Par Equity portfolio company, Phlo, announce a significant partnership with one of the UK's largest supermarkets, Morrisons, to digitise and accelerate its pharmacy business.    🏢 Morrisons was founded in Bradford, Yorkshire, in 1899. Building on this heritage, it's great to see how novel technologies and business model innovation can empower traditional businesses to remain at the forefront of their industries.   👏 Huge congratulations on the launch, Adam Hunter, Alistair Murray, James Maciver, Lauren Nicholson, Dr. Jonathan F., Christopher Cullen, Neal Archbold ACMA, CGMA, 📈 Assean Sheikh and the entire Phlo team.   Glasgow-based, Phlo was one of the first investments from our new institutional Scale-up Fund. The Morrisons contract will build on sensational growth achieved over the last 12 months, which is testament to the team and the investment case put forward:   📈 Market: £26bn pharmacy market in the UK alone, yet only 2.5% digital penetration to date. Huge tail wind for digital pharmacy growth.   👩💻 Product: innovative tech-led solutions which dramatically improve workflows for pharmacy operations. Lots of chatter about big chain pharmacy profit from participation in 340B contract pharmacy arrangements. Lots of double-speak about how this should be skewed more towards independent pharmacy while simultaneously saying it's hurting independent pharmacies. Huh. Which is it? This is a worthy discussion to have, but as always the matter is more nuanced than the out of context soundbites and infographics that people like to share. The harsh reality is there aren't enough independents to take care of the patients. Patients can't go to a pharmacy that doesn't exist. That is a PBM monopoly problem, not a 340B problem. I see independents doing well on contract pharmacy relationships, and partnering with CE's in ways that benefit the community. Often in ways the chains can't or won't. I'm all for involving more independents where it makes sense to do so. As for the total profits of the big chains--these fees aren't much different between independent and chain. The difference is scale, and who owns the TPA. Obviously Walgreens makes more than a local independent in total. They fill 10,000x more prescriptions. ‼️NCPA is joining a class action lawsuit against GoodRx as well as CVS Caremark Corp.; Express Scripts, Inc.; MedImpact Healthcare Systems, Inc.; and Navitus Health Solutions, LLC, accusing them of colluding in a price-fixing scheme to fix reimbursements to independent pharmacies. “GoodRx’s business model already potentially misleads consumers by preferentially listing some large chain pharmacies in their search results despite the higher-ranked pharmacies having higher prices, excluding nearly all independent pharmacies from appearing in the results,” said NCPA CEO Douglas Hoey. “The actions alleged in this class action suit further disadvantage small businesses and cater to PBMs.” Learn more: https://lnkd.in/g2eSnu2y
