Thrilled to share our new publication in BMC Medicine 🎉 which was led by our team and collaborated with researchers in University of Cambridge and Peking Union Medical College. Highlights : - 🧬genetic evidence that ferritin may play a mediating role in the association of insulin resistance and liver steatosis, liver iron content may be the factor linking ferritin and liver steatosis - 🧬Paradoxical findings of HbA1c in liver steatosis may be explained by the erythropoietic properties of HbA1c - 🧬Another paradoxical findings is the inverse association of fasting glucose and liver steatosis, which may be biased by the pleiotropic genetic variant rs1260326 in GCKR, especially in UK Biobank I would like to express my heartfelt appreciations to my supervisor, Dr. Au Yeung Shiu Lun Ryan. Publication No 3 of 2024! One of our scientific papers has been accepted for publication! In the study, we have investigated the critical role of mitochondrial dysfunction in the onset and progression of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM). It highlights how impaired mitochondrial function not only affects cellular health but also energy metabolism and insulin sensitivity. The study further evaluates promising therapeutic strategies that target and enhance mitochondrial function, biogenesis, and oxidative stress reduction. By improving mitochondrial efficiency and insulin action, these therapies aim to address the complex challenges of T2DM, offering a comprehensive approach to managing the disease and improving patient outcomes through innovative, mitochondria-centric treatments. 📍 Weight loss caused by common diabetes drug tied to “anti-hunger” molecule in study Excerpt: An “anti-hunger” molecule produced after vigorous exercise is responsible for the moderate weight loss caused by the diabetes medication metformin, according to a new study in mice and humans. The molecule, lac-phe, was discovered by Stanford Medicine researchers in 2022. The finding, made jointly by researchers at Stanford University School of Medicine and at Harvard Medical School, further cements the critical role the molecule, called lac-phe, plays in metabolism, exercise and appetite. It may pave the way to a new class of weight loss drugs. “Until now, the way metformin, which is prescribed to control blood sugar levels, also brings about weight loss has been unclear,” said Jonathan Long, PhD, an assistant professor of pathology. “Now we know that it is acting through the same pathway as vigorous exercise to reduce hunger. Understanding how these pathways are controlled may lead to viable strategies to lower body mass and improve health in millions of people.” Many people with diabetes who are prescribed metformin lose around 2% to 3% of their body weight within the first year of starting the drug. Although this amount of weight loss is modest when compared with the 15% or more often seen by people taking semaglutide drugs such as Ozempic and Wegovy, the discoveries that led to those drugs also grew from observations of relatively minor, but reproducible, weight loss in people taking first-generation versions of the medications. How does the incretin effect differ between type 1 and type 2 diabetes? The incretin effect differs significantly between type 1 and type 2 diabetes. In type 2 diabetes, the incretin effect is markedly reduced or absent due to impaired insulin secretion in response to the incretin hormones GIP and GLP-1, with GIP being particularly affected. Conversely, in type 1 diabetes, while the incretin effect may also be diminished, some studies suggest that it can be preserved to a degree, particularly in patients with certain conditions like end-stage nephropathy. Thus, the underlying mechanisms and responses to incretin hormones vary notably between the two diabetes types. "The researchers embarked on a journey to understand how CBGA and CBD could impact kidney damage in two models of kidney disease: acute, induced by the chemotherapeutic agent cisplatin, and chronic, caused by unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO). The findings? CBGA, but not CBD, protected the kidneys from cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity. CBGa significantly suppressed mRNA of inflammatory cytokines in cisplatin-induced nephropathy, showcasing its powerful anti-inflammatory properties. Moreover, both cannabinoids reduced apoptosis, a form of programmed cell death, indicating their protective effects on kidney cells. 🔬 AMRA Publishes Review Article in Renowned Cardiovascular Journal, “Circulation” 🫀   We are proud to share that a recent review primer - co-authored by our very own Jennifer Linge, PhD - was published in Circulation! The article explores the complex relationship between GLP-1-based therapies and muscle health, particularly in the context of using the drugs for weight reduction.   As weight loss treatments reach new heights, understanding their impact on muscle composition & quality is crucial.
