Holistic Heart Centers Transforms its Practice with Kardia 12L

Patients and physicians alike are amazed by how our latest innovation, Kardia 12L ECG System, simplifies and expedites the 12-lead ECG process. We spoke with Dr. Regina Druz, CEO and Founder of Holistic Heart Centers of America, and one of the first to adopt Kardia 12L, to learn how this first-of-its-kind ECG system is transforming both her practice and her patients' experience.

Tell us about Holistic Heart Centers and how you’ve been using Kardia in your practice.

At Holistic Heart Centers, our goal is to reverse and prevent heart disease by providing patients with lifestyle programs, medication and testing guidance, using digital resources as biomarkers, including wearable devices, and disease detection tools like AliveCor’s Kardia ECG device. I believe Kardia's offerings are important because they significantly improve access to cardiac care. When I received the Kardia 12L and shared it on my social accounts, I received numerous inquiries from patients and colleagues, including cardiologists and PCPs, eager to learn about it. The availability of these devices at a reasonable price, along with AI assistance, is vital. With Kardia personal ECGs, it’s easier for me to provide patients a device and a practice code, instructing them to record an ECG at a specific frequency, and bundle that with our reports.

How was your first experience using Kardia 12L, and how did it differ from using a traditional ECG machine?

Previously, I would walk around with wires and a bulky machine—now that hassle is gone. Kardia 12L is a fully portable solution unlike standard ECG machines, which can be bulky and heavy. Some machines advertise portability, but they still require multiple steps and connections. The cloud-based nature of Kardia eliminates the need for cumbersome setups.

Kardia 12L is battery-operated, weighs just 0.3 pounds and can fit in a pocket.

How has Kardia 12L impacted your practice?

Honestly, the impact has been superb. It’s a valuable addition that increases access to diagnostic-level baseline cardiac testing, starting with an ECG. I appreciate that it integrates seamlessly into my existing platform, allowing me to download PDFs of the ECG and attach them to patient charts. Despite being a primarily virtual practice with few in-person locations, where I see patients for specific reasons, our new offering (Kardia 12L) has attracted many more patients. They want up-to-date information, and being able to provide it quickly and easily has been beneficial. It fits into our workflow without disruption.

Considering the costs of traditional ECG machines and their supplies, Kardia 12L is much better priced. It opens new possibilities, such as sending a technician to a patient's home or workplace to conduct an AI-interpreted ECG. I can see the results on my dashboard almost immediately, and the device is compact enough to fit in a purse or pocket.

How did the patients react to seeing Kardia 12L? How did the device impact their ECG experience?

Patients are very impressed with the device's small and sleek design. Kardia 12L is super easy to use, and the information it provides is excellent. Additionally, I found that a good quality diagnostic ECG can be obtained even while the patient is partially clothed. This is extremely helpful, especially for female patients, as they are often uncomfortable fully disrobing for ECG recordings.

Kardia 12L makes the ECG experience comfortable for patients.

What would you tell other healthcare professionals considering adopting the device?

As an early adopter, I’m impressed with the quality and portability of the device. I believe it should become the standard of care in ERs and any setting that performs ECGs. The device’s smaller footprint and lightweight design make point-of-care ECGs feasible. Shortening the time between acquisition and interpretation is extremely valuable, and the assist with interpretation enhances its utility.
