Improving the Accessibility of Pop-Ups and Interstitials
Google has announced changes to their algorithm that may result in sites utilizing interstitial and/or pop-up ads that block access to content to rank lower than other sites. Primarily the focus will be on mobile content and ads that block the visitors ability to navigate the site or at least visualize the underlying content.
I’ve found a couple resources I’d like to pass along that may help you both understand some creative methods for displaying content similar to what is often found in the now negative practice. The best solutions I’ve seen involve displaying similar content after a user has already visited the site initially. It’s important you spend time researching what solution best fits your site and/or market. Below are the helpful links I promised:
Mobile Website Optimization: 9 Ways to Optimize Your Mobile Site Today
WordPress 4.7 recently eclipsed 15 million downloads in just over a month. Many of you are likely utilizing plugins to provide interstitial content/ads. One of the key features that will help you keep your site compliant with the changes is the ability to control the size of the content dependent upon user-agent so that you are able to carefully craft an ad plan that you can be certain is not hurting your site’s search engine rankings. My suggestion would be to research ahead of time to ensure that your ad plugin is going to assist you in complying to the changes. One such plugin is PopUpAlly Pro. I've chosen to utilize the Hello Bar which is also compliant when applied properly.
Feel free to leave other suggestions and links to compliant plugins in the comments along with any questions you might have.
