LinkedIn Publishing Is Not For Me -Where should I write about New Android Development?

LinkedIn has become my primary network for consuming social media since - well - changes at other platforms I used to use. Most of what I read is around jobs, but I wanted to have more conversations about software development and in particular mobile software development.

Then I noticed that LinkedIn has a publishing capability. It has a pretty clean style, ability to embed videos (I learn a lot from YouTube:), and it even had the ability to

...Format stuff like code

This morning, I was updating my second post in a series on New Android Development (a long one on Authenticating with Firebase + Kotlin + Google Login), and the code snippet tool was mis-behaving. I could not post regular text under the code snippet block at the bottom of the page. I was able to create more code snippet blocks (a lot of them), so I highlighted and deleted three of them with a backspace and...

...it was then that the editor decided I was trying to delete the entire blog post. So it did it for me. Wiped a couple of pages of detailed notes around Kotlin Firebase Authentication. There is no undo. There is no history to recover previously saved versions (that I could see). There is no option to not save it because it is automatically saved all the time.

Kind of a bummer - but probably helped me in the end. This is not the right tool for the job (at least not right for me). I am going to be better off investing my time and energy on a platform more focused on writing about software development.

The platforms that I have seen other developers/product builders use:

  • Dev.to
  • Medium

I am not going to do another Word Press site (I am looking to join a conversation about software - Word Press is too lonely unless you invest a TON of energy). Any thoughts appreciated.

Matt - one aspect is content publishing capabilities but LI provides you a ton of traffic. How are you planning on bringing traffic to your blog on Hashnode? Do they have a ton of users that can help you discover your blog?

Sharing for others who are looking for a technical blogging home: hashnode. You can take a gander at my blog at blog.dyor.com. If you end up using it, please share your experience as a comment. I think it is a fantastic technical CMS (perhaps my experience with LinkedIn Publishing has set my standards too low).
