The retention of current staff and prospective employees to your business is an important issue. The recruitment of new and existing staff can be costly to the business both from a commercial and monetary viewpoint bearing in mind factors such as training, loss of skills and knowledge, increasing workload within the team as well as the cost of hiring a candidate.

However there are factors to bear in mind that can assist in ensuring that you create a workplace that means employees want to stay with your business and you get an investment out new hires.

Create a Challenging Environment

Employees that you view to be potential long term employees should respond well to challenges and be motivated by tasks and projects. Ensure that from first day, new employees are being set challenges on a regular basis to make sure that they feel like they are making a positive impact on the business. By doing so, this will give them a personal sense of pride and achievement which will result your business giving them job satisfaction.

Inspire, Motivate and Develop

It is important that you have individuals and team that want to achieve success on a daily, weekly, monthly and annual basis in your workplace. This can be achieved by having support and leadership structures in place that challenge employees regularly and lead by example in order to drive performance and results.

Performance Management

Support your employees and staff, whether they are doing well or underachieving at any given moment in their career. Performance management can be a fantastic way to take employees performance from ‘Good to Great’ or bring them back up to a productive a satisfactory level. Do not put pressure on your employees and offer them support and guidance in areas of their job which need improving.

Progression Opportunities

Set clear goals and realistic opportunities from the offer process as to what opportunities are available within the business. It is important that you set clear goals and objectives in line with sensible timescales to give your employees something to work towards and continuing to get the best out of them.

Reward Achievement

Candidates of all levels like to be rewarded and made to feel appreciated for their positive behaviour and actions in the workplace. The best way to continue driving positive performance from your members of staff is to offer frequent rewards outside of the contracted salary and benefits package. By doing this you create an enviable working in environment that would be difficult to replicate should your employees looking to move.

All businesses are unique and have different visions and values as an organisation, however the consistent factor in all businesses is that employees are at the heart of how they function. If you can implement some of the factors listed above into your environment this will assist in ensuring you create a stable workforce which will give you a return in your recruitment process.
