Solar Efficiency Gains, UK Storage Policy, and New Heat Pump Solutions
Welcome to another edition of Weekly Insights ⭐ This week we catch up on the latest in module efficiency, support for long-duration energy storage, new research into techniques for keeping PV modules cool and more.
LONGi Solar has introduced the Hi-MO X10, a back-contact solar module with up to 24.8% efficiency and a maximum output of 670 W. The module features an anti-dust design that boosts energy generation by over 10% compared to TOPCon panels. In the United Kingdom, Ofgem has announced the criteria for its long duration energy storage (LDES) cap-and-floor scheme, which will open in April 2025.
Researchers from Al-Azhar University have also tested a dual-use system for PV panels that cools the back while cleaning the front, increasing power output by up to 33% compared to contaminated panels. Don’t miss out on even more top news and insights including the launch of a new residential air-to-water heat pump from Carrier with a coefficient of performance (COP) of 4.9.

LONGi Solar has launched its Hi-MO X10 anti-dust solar panel at the China (Jinan) International Solar Energy Utilization Conference.
The new module series uses Longi’s second-generation hybrid passivated back contact (HPBC 2.0) cell technology. It includes seven models, all with a uniform half-cell (6×24) design and dimensions of 2,382 mm × 1,134 mm × 30 mm. Power output ranges from 640 W to 670 W, with efficiency between 23.7% and 24.8%.

Long duration energy storage (LDES) support scheme will have eight-hour minimum. First application round opens to well-established technologies, such as lithium-ion battery technology, with at least 100 MW capacity in April 2025. Flow batteries, compressed air, and liquid air likely to progress in second round, says regulator.
Other eligibility criteria include producing cost estimates. Evidence of upfront engineering, and evidence that a grid connection application has been submitted. Projects must also have planning consent in place by the start of the project assessment phase, scheduled for the third quarter of 2025.

An experimental system cools PV panels while keeping them clean
Researchers had placed a cotton sheet on the back of a PV module, which was then made wet and cooled. On the front side, water was pumped water from a pipe in a way that kept the panel both cool and clean. Their experimental setup showed superior results compared to reference cooling technologies.
A group led by scientists from Egypt’s Al-Azhar University has proposed a novel dual-use system for solar PV (SPV) panels, cooling them from both sides while also cleaning bird-dropping from the front side. Developing an experimental setup of the system, the group has also tested it under the conditions in Cairo.
“It is estimated that during operation, 17% of incident solar radiation is absorbed for power while the remaining portion is wasted as heat. Additionally, the heat in the surrounding air degrades the efficiency and power output of solar panels by increasing the temperature of their cells,“ the researchers explained

2wI would suggest Eskom boosts it's Energy Efficiency budget in South Africa as much as new generation. The parallel effect will lead to job creation in both short and medium term. This was a vital component Brian Dames as CEO at the time accelerated. Thank you.
