Is telehealth the future of behavioral health care?

Months of stress, anxiety and uncertainty have felt like the norm since the COVID-19 pandemic took hold. Changes in routine, economic challenges brought on by job loss, and overall fear about the future have led even the strongest among us to worry more than usual.

That’s why continued access to behavioral health care is critically important.

Recent data from Regence show that 85 percent of health plan members who were already getting behavioral health treatment were able to continue their care during the pandemic by successfully switching to virtual options from the earliest days of physical distancing. Additionally, many members that were experiencing stress and needing behavioral health services for the first time were also able to access care through virtual options.

Regence quickly collaborated with providers to meet an increased member demand for telehealth, serving routine needs and COVID-19-related care.

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to an increase in mental health concerns, so it’s more important than ever to ensure access to behavioral health services. Virtual options, including solutions offered through the telephone, video or text, are a safe and convenient way to ensure people get the help they need.

Beyond behavioral health, other areas of care have also seen big increases in use. Regence’s telehealth claims are up 4900 percent during the pandemic. In January, Regence saw an average of 1,000 telehealth visits a week. In May, that average was more than 50,000 a week.

For those who perhaps are feeling increased stress and anxiety but don’t think they need to see a provider, your health insurer may offer other options.

Regence members have access to a wellness platform, Regence Empower, which offers self-guided programs on managing stress, building resilience and boosting nutrition, among other topics. Many members also have access to myStrength, a behavioral health app that offers COVID-19 and mental wellness resources, including tips for parenting during challenging times and ideas to manage feelings of isolation.
