Great reminder on an important benefit of helical piles - the ability to conduct a load test to confirm engineered capacity of the foundation.
This is a compression load test we helped set up for a customer in California. Load tests essentially simulate the load of a foundation––plus a pre-determined factor of safety––on a test pile to make sure it's up to the task "in situ" (the soil conditions of the site.) A hydrualic jack is hooked up to the pile and held in place by beams and anchors, and downward force (aka "load") is incrementally increased. All along the way, a load cell measures the force being applied, while dial gauges detect any settlement or movement of the pile. This test came out exactly as planned, and the project could move forward as designed. If the load test raises any concerns about failure, however, one of the benefits to helical foundations is that the design can be updated to increase the depth, the number of piles, or the size/configuration of the helical piles themselves and tested again. Measure twice, cut once. We use load tests in tension applications, too, but the hydraulic jack is basically reversed, and pulls upward on the installed helical anchor instead of pushing down. Our field experts help with these tests all the time, and it's one way we can help you make sure your projects are done right the first time.
