Private equity fund vintages from 2005 and 2006 — those launched right before the GFC — “took over nine years, on average, to return capital to investors, raising fears that the capital lodged in current portfolios will take equally long, or even longer, to pay back.” There are some good signs: Last year, after the worst environment since 2008, the value of buyouts did bounce back, jumping 37 percent year over year to $602 billion. In the latest edition of Institutional Investor Magazine's Essential Allocator, James Comtois digs into North Carolina Treasurer Brad Briner’s plan to build up the $127B state pension’s investment office and governance structure. North Carolina is one of three states where the treasurer holds sole fiduciary authority over the state retirement system. So, Briner is looking to replace this structure with a five-member board that the Treasurer would chair. He also wants to remove “outdated statutes” restricting where the retirement systems can invest and how much.
