NCI explores AI’s potential for cancer screenings The National Cancer Institute (NCI) is exploring how it can leverage artificial intelligence to enhance cancer screening techniques, ultimately improving patient outcomes across the nation. In this Cancer Healthcast interview, Dr. Katrina Goddard, director of the Division of Cancer Control and Population Sciences at NCI, NIH, explains how our division is leveraging AI, and other innovative solutions like the low-dose CT scan, to better detect lung cancer and enable better access to data. Dr. Goddard also shares details from a recent study that highlights the major role screenings and prevention have played in decreasing the cancer mortality rates over the past 40 years. About us
As NCI’s bridge to public health research, practice, and policy, the Division of Cancer Control and Population Sciences (DCCPS) plays a unique role in reducing the burden of cancer in America. DCCPS has the lead responsibility at NCI for supporting research in surveillance, epidemiology, health services, behavioral science, and cancer survivorship. The division also plays a central role within the federal government as a source of expertise and evidence on issues such as the quality of cancer care, the economic burden of cancer, geographic information systems, statistical methods, communication science, comparative effectiveness research, obesity, tobacco control, and the translation of research into practice. Who is a cancer survivor? NCI defines a cancer survivor as someone from the moment of diagnosis through the balance of life. But survivorship is more than just a definition—it’s a state of being that includes the unique challenges and needs of those who have been diagnosed with cancer. Having a shared vocabulary helps advance research, improve care delivery, and support survivors and their caregivers. Explore key survivorship definitions and learn more about how we define and support the cancer survivor community: https://lnkd.in/gcfWjADX.
