About us

The overall objective of the project is to offer cost-effective alternatives for remittances and opportunities for investment of savings. Three specific objectives: 1. Understand the remittance flows and behaviours of diaspora in Belgium; 2. Make the remit senders in Belgium and the remit receivers in Countries of Origin (3 selected corridors: DRC, Senegal, Morocco) increasingly aware of different remit options and factors that influence remitting behaviour; 3. Offer the opportunity to diaspora to use savings for SME investments within 3 targeted African economies. Implemented by the International Organization for Migration in Belgium and Luxembourg, in partnership with: National Bank of Belgium, ZidiCircle and Ondernemers voor Ondernemers and with the support of IOM’s Diaspora Advisory and IOM colleagues in Morocco, Senegal and the Democratic Republic of Congo. 📢 Wrapping Up O-REMIT: Empowering Diaspora for Sustainable Impact! 🌍💡 Since the beginning of the year, we have been implementing a series of "Train the Trainer" workshops, equipping diaspora members with the tools and data developed under the O-REMIT project, in collaboration with diaspora organizations such as infoDev ASBL and Oasis Belgium. These sessions have been instrumental in fostering diaspora ownership and strengthening their role in maximizing the impact of remittances. As a final highlight, we hosted an engaging panel discussion with Salon des Diasporas Noires on diaspora investments in countries of origin and the key role of remittances in sustainable development. This marks the conclusion of our journey with O-REMIT, but the impact and insights gained will continue to inspire action. 💡 Reducing Transaction Costs: unlocking the potential of remittances According to IOM Belgium and Luxembourg's 2024 report, a 1% reduction in transaction costs leads to a 1% increase in remittance outflows. 📈 Lowering transaction costs, enhancing price transparency, and ensuring faster, safer services are crucial for promoting financial inclusion and empowering migrants and diaspora to fully contribute to sustainable development in their countries of origin. We are honoured that our O-REMIT initiative has been officially recognised as a certified Good Practice on Migration by IOM's Innovation and Knowledge Management Unit! This recognition celebrates O-REMIT's innovative approach towards partnerships, for example with diaspora groups, banks, SMEs and Money Transfer Operators (MTOs), in order to achieve SDG target 10.C in reducing remittance costs under a 3% threshold. 🌍✨ Within the scope of the O-REMIT project, which focuses on remittances, IOM Belgium & Luxembourg organised workshops on financial and digital inclusion for Senegalese citizens. The following topics were discussed: 1️⃣ Personal finances and investment; 2️⃣ How to optimise savings; 3️⃣ Case studies on how to use different budgeting techniques; 4️⃣ Case studies on how to use the website and apps of money transfer operators; 5️⃣ The IOM MigApp to conduct cost comparisons between different money transfer operators per country. With the support of OIM Sénégal (and specifically Ibrahima THIAM and gabrielle Kine rose Ndaw), a workshop was organized in Dakar. The participants left with positive feedback on the workshop. More than half of the participants were women, showing the clear interest of women in gaining more insights on the topic of financial and digital inclusion for remittances. 💪 ℹ O-REMIT is a project funded by the Belgian government and implemented by IOM Belgium and Luxembourg and Zidicircle, Ondernemers voor Ondernemers vzw, National Bank of Belgium and diaspora organisations. #remittances #sustainabledevelopment #diasporaengagement
