𝐒𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐧 𝐂𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐚 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐞 𝐮𝐩𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐞 Words cannot express how deeply saddening and shocking it has been to watch the devastation caused by this week’s wildfires in Southern California. This is not the start to a new year that any of us expected. Many of our caregivers and medical staff live in the evacuation zones, and we’re hearing that several have lost their homes. Our hearts are with each and every one of them, and Providence is actively working to assist affected caregivers with temporary housing and other needs. Our communities have faced many wildfires and other natural disasters in the past, but this is the most destructive event the greater Los Angeles area has ever seen. I remain in awe of how our teams have come together to ensure we can continue to be here for our patients, especially those who are most vulnerable. I also want to acknowledge all the brave firefighters, first responders and volunteers who are risking their lives to protect others. It’s not enough to say that we owe all of you a debt of gratitude. Your bravery and dedication are truly inspiring. 𝐆𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞: Los Angeles is home to many Providence services, including our primary care clinic in Pacific Palisades, which we believe has been destroyed in the blaze. As of this post, all six of our area hospitals remain open for critical services. Some outpatient services including doctors’ offices are closed. If you have an appointment, call in advance to confirm. If you are affected by these fires, please know that Providence caregivers near and far are standing with you, offering our thoughts, support, and prayers. In the face of such overwhelming loss, unity and compassion will help our communities rebuild and move forward into the future. Please be safe as this situation continues to evolve.

One of the blessings of being in this role is having conversations with donors about what inspires their philanthropy. As I reflect on 2024, I recall a conversation with a donor who told me “I see philanthropy as a way to both promote joy and alleviate suffering.” This simple but profound statement has stayed with me, and as I think about the impact our donors have had through Providence Inland Northwest Foundation, I see how their investments have accomplished both aspirations. When I think about joy, I think about the look on sweet Ade’s face when she got visits from Annika, our facility dog, during her hospital stay. Ade, a young patient with Down’s Syndrom who was recovering from a heart procedure, loved the quiet presence of Annika, who was funded through gifts to our foundation. I also remember Tanisha on the day she got to hold her baby Cameron for the first time after he was born at 26 weeks and spent the first two weeks in the safety of a Giraffe Omnibed in the NICU – funded through philanthropy. And I remember a donation from a family member who wanted to recognize our music thanatologist, who beautifully played the harp as her partner passed, providing peace and comfort during a sacred time. Every day I also see countless ways that philanthropy alleviates suffering. I reflect on our new ION robot, which is pushing the limits of early detection and treatment of lung cancer, giving patients new hope for a happy, healthy future. I think about the investments we’ve made in our community clinic, the only no-barrier clinic offering health care to those experiencing homelessness. Through the generosity of our community, we invested over $60,000 to purchase everything from hot meals to hygiene items and medical supplies. And I think about the smaller gifts – a gas card for a patient traveling from out of town, a wheelchair for a patient being discharged, a cribette to provide a baby a safe place to sleep – small acts of compassion that ease the way for our patients. In a world that can feel divided and dark, we are blessed to bear witness to the incredible generosity of the human spirit. For all the ways our donors help promote joy and alleviate suffering, we are profoundly grateful. Today and always. Sending best wishes for a happy, healthy 2025 from the Providence Inland Northwest Foundation team.

In October, we announced the opening of the Howard “H” White Center for Cardiac Amyloidosis at Providence Heart Institute in Portland, Ore. The new center marked a significant advancement in our efforts to provide world-class heart care, fueled by the vision and generosity of Howard “H” White. Howard “H” White, one of the masterminds behind the famous Jordan Brand (Nike, Inc.) and a trusted advisor to Michael Jordan, turned his personal battle with cardiac amyloidosis into a philanthropic endeavor. After receiving a life-saving heart transplant from our team, Howard is now advocating for early detection and treatment of this under diagnosed and progressive disease, which disproportionately affects the Black community. Michael Jordan joined this effort by making a $1 million donation, alongside contributions from other high-profile supporters like Chris Tucker, Ludacris, and leaders from NIKE Inc. Their collective support will drive innovative approaches, including the use of artificial intelligence, to achieve earlier diagnosis and better health outcomes. Howard White encapsulates our shared vision: "Believing in the impossible obliges us to help others. This new center will not only save lives but prevent others from needing heart transplants like I did." Together, we are setting new standards in heart care. ▶️ Learn more: http://ms.spr.ly/6040oYPJG 🎧 Listen to Howard White and his care team on our Talk With a Doc Podcast: http://ms.spr.ly/6041oYPJH #HealthForAbetterWorld #ProvidenceCares #hearthealth #cardiaccare
