About us
St. Joseph Hospital in Orange, California is a nationally recognized, 463-bed, not-for-profit Catholic hospital that was founded in 1929 by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange. Fully accredited by The Joint Commission and designated as a Magnet hospital for nursing excellence, St. Joseph Hospital's reputation for clinical excellence and compassionate, family-centered care draws patients from all over the United States. This is one reason why St. Joseph Hospital was named one of the top hospitals in the Los Angeles/Orange County area by U.S. News & World Report for four years in a row. With a highly recognized medical staff of over 1,000 physicians and more than 3,100 employees, St. Joseph Hospital is home to more than 75 specialty programs, including The Center for Cancer Prevention and Treatment, the Heart and Vascular Center, and a nationally acclaimed orthopedics program that has been ranked among the top 50 in the nation by U.S. News & World Report. Equally important is St. Joseph Hospital's dedication to caring for the medically underserved through health education programs, a free-standing medical and dental clinic, and mobile health clinics. St. Joseph Hospital depends on philanthropic support from the community to carry out its mission. These efforts are coordinated through the St. Joseph Hospital Foundation. St. Joseph Hospital is part of Providence St. Joseph Health, a health system of 119,000 employees serving in 50 hospitals, 829 clinics and a comprehensive range of services across Alaska, California, Montana, New Mexico, Oregon, Texas and Washington. This week we wrapped up a three-day site visit as we work to achieve our 5th Magnet designation. Magnet is the highest honor a healthcare organization can receive for nursing excellence, recognizing the highest standard of care for patients. We hope to receive notification of our 5th designation later this spring, but in the meantime, we want to congratulate our team on their commitment and dedication to excellence. #ProvidenceStJosephOrange #journeytomagnet

Today we unveiled our Wings of Compassion selfie wall. The angel wings were painted by American-born artist Colette Miller who created the Global Angels Wings Project in 2012, in the streets of Los Angeles, the City of Angels. The paintings are human-sized interactive public art. Colette has painted wings globally in Kenya, Australia, Europe, England, Ukraine, Japan, Cuba, Mexico, Russia, Taiwan, China and locations throughout the U.S. In addition to our work of art, she just completed angel wings in Altadena to support the LA fire victims. We are thrilled to have the opportunity to have the Wings of Compassion to honor our caregivers and the sacred work they do every day. Our hope is that the Wings will be a reminder of the humble angels among us. You'll find the Wings selfie wall near our front entrance. #ProvidenceStJosephOrange #SoStJoes

Theodore Bryan, MD, an interventional radiologist at Providence St. Joseph, spoke with Sportskeeda about Spurs' Victor Wembanyama's blood clot and recovery. With the player out for the rest of the season, Dr Bryan said, "It gives them time to manage this and ensure he has a long and meaningful career as opposed to trying to put a quick fix on this and risk a blood clot happening again." Could the way you sleep reveal something deeper about your mental health? Some suggest it could indicate that your nervous system is active, reflecting high-stress levels and emotional discomfort. While compelling, there's little evidence to back it up. According to Bruce Tammelin, MD, medical director of Providence St. Joseph Hospital Sleep Disorders Center, “It’s somewhat controversial. The original paper [on sleep positions] was done by a psychiatrist in the late 70s, so it’s not well studied.” Want to learn more? Dr. Neal H Patel, a primary care physician at Providence St Joseph Hospital in California, told Daily Mail News the bruise could be from a blood draw or IV infusion poking through weak blood vessels. Dr Patel also rejected the idea that Trump just shakes too many hands. 'I see a lot of patients who are businessmen, and I've never really seen them getting bruising from too much handshaking,' he said. 'I guess it's possible, but that would really not be on my list of ideas of what causes it.' #ProvidenceStJosephOrange http://ms.spr.ly/6046UCpt0

It's the start of TIPs (Training into Practice) orientation at St. Joseph Hospital. This is when new graduate nurses join our team -- our seasoned nurses mentor them, teach them the ropes and help them discover what it takes to become a stellar nurse. We're excited to have them on this journey and for all that's ahead of them. #SoStJoes

It takes a team to save a life. We hosted a Heart Recovery Reunion to honor our physicians, caregivers, EMS and most importantly, our patient, Curtis, whose life was saved by this incredible team. Last summer, Curtis – a construction worker from Mission Viejo – was closing a job site when he began to experience light headedness and chest pain. Luckily, a good Samaritan happened to be nearby and called 911. Curtis was transported to our Heart and Vascular Center. Our expert team worked around the clock to save him. After multiple cardiac arrests, cardiologist Michael Chan, MD, identified a 100% occlusion of the right coronary artery and implanted the Impella CP heart pump. Curtis was intubated and sedated with the hope that his heart would rest and recover. After four days, Curtis' heart function improved and the Impella was removed. Curtis returned home to his family after a 13-day hospitalization with a new lease on life. He’s diligent about his new healthy diet and works hard in cardiac rehabilitation. Curtis and his family reunited with the team who saved his life – caregivers from Emergency, Heart & Vascular, Intensive Care, Med Tele, Nephrology and Lab, along with Dr. Chan and intensivists Dr. Peter Smethurst and Dr. Desmond Sjauwfoekloy, and our partners at Abiomed – whose innovative technology helps us save lives. #heartmonth ❤️ #SoStJoes
