Woman injured in elephant attack near Valparai dies

A 65-year-old woman who was attacked by a wild elephant near Valparai on Sunday night succumbed to injuries on Monday night.

P. Annalakshmi, 65, a native of Perambalur, died without responding to treatment at the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH), said a Forest Department official.

Annalakshmi, who had been residing in one of the line houses for employees of a private estate near Valparai, was attacked by a lone wild elephant at around 10.50 p.m. on Sunday. She was trampled by the elephant when she came out of her residence after hearing noises of the animal damaging the door of a ration shop on the premises.

Annalakshmi was taken to the Government Hospital at Valparai and later shifted to the District Headquarters Hospital at Pollachi.

She was referred to CMCH after her condition deteriorated. Though she was admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU), she did not respond to treatment and died late on Monday.
