Mike McIntyre 8 minute read Monday, Mar. 31, 2025

The Winnipeg Jets currently have 21 drafted and developing skaters in various leagues and levels who could one day work their way up to the big club. Ten of them are currently with the Manitoba Moose while 11 are scattered around the Canadian Hockey League, college and European clubs.

To help you keep tabs, we are checking in on the kids each month over the course of the season.

The playoffs have arrived for several of the organization’s top prospects, which provides a chance to see how they perform under increased pressure. Jets general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff and his staff will be pleased by the early returns.

Let’s start in the Western Hockey League with the top forward in the system, Brayden Yager, who has led his Lethbridge Hurricanes to a 2-0 first-round series lead over the Brandon Wheat Kings.

Salomonsson turning heads with Moose

Mike McIntyre 4 minute read Monday, Feb. 10, 2025

There has not been a ton of positive news coming out of the Manitoba Moose this season. Elias Salomonsson would be a notable exception.

The 20-year-old defenceman from Sweden is enjoying a successful rookie year, even if it included a nearly two-month absence after suffering a right shoulder injury when he was on the receiving end of a big hit during a Dec. 6 game against Belleville.

Now back to full health, Salomonsson had two assists on Sunday afternoon in a 7-2 victory over the Iowa Wild and showed why he is viewed as the best blue-line prospect currently in the Winnipeg Jets pipeline.

“It was a long time to be sidelined,” Salomonsson told the Free Press following the game. “But I’m happy to be back and getting back up to pace. Feeling better and better.”

Moose look to build on success

The surging Winnipeg Jets are enjoying life in the NHL’s penthouse suite. It’s a much different story for the struggling Manitoba Moose, who find themselves fighting just to stay out of the basement of the AHL standings.

What’s been going wrong on the farm this season?

“I think there’s been times where we’ve had the execution and it hasn’t gone in the net. I think over time, if that continues to be the trend and you’re getting the chances but it doesn’t go in, that can start to fester and carry over,” Moose assistant coach Morgan Klimchuk told the Free Press.

“And confidence, it’s a buzzword in hockey but you really see it.”

For the longest time, Colby Barlow wasn’t really looking like a first-round draft pick. The 19-year-old winger had a fairly forgettable training camp with the Jets last fall, then was sent back to junior with the message of tearing it up and making the Canadian World Junior club.

Ford firing on all cylinders after Jets recall

BOSTON — Parker Ford was in a deep sleep, though this jarring phone call was one he’d been waiting for his entire life.

As he awoke in a hotel room in the Chicago suburbs preparing to suit up for the Manitoba Moose on Wednesday night, the voice on the other end of the line told him he’d been recalled by the Winnipeg Jets.

This was not a dream though, it was very much a reality.

“We were on a road trip and I was actually pre-game napping and my phone started ringing,” Ford said after the morning skate on Thursday. “I thought it was my alarm, but it was the call. Yeah, just pure joy in the moment.”

Ken Wiebe 3 minute read Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2025

BOSTON — Morgan Barron is the latest Winnipeg Jets player to be bitten by the injury bug.

The Winnipeg Jets forward was placed on injured reserve on Wednesday, according to Puck Pedia.

That would leave the Jets with only 12 healthy forwards, so it probably wasn’t a coincidence Parker Ford was scratched from the Manitoba Moose on Wednesday night.

An official recall of a forward isn’t expected until Thursday morning, since the Jets had already recalled Brad Lambert for the three-game road trip.

Nomadic netminder Kahkonen back between pipes for Manitoba Moose

Massimo De Luca-Taronno 4 minute read Thursday, Nov. 28, 2024

The American Hockey League season hasn’t reached its quarter point, but it’s already been quite the journey for Manitoba Moose goaltender Kaapo Kähkönen.

“It’s such a crazy world,” said Kähkönen after Thursday morning practice at Canada Life Centre. “It’s a business; I understand it’s part of it… but ideally you’d like to stay somewhere for a little longer.”

The 28-year-old product of Helsinki, Finland, signed a one-year, US$1-million deal with the Jets this summer, expecting to get a kick at the can playing in the number two spot behind 2024 Vezina Trophy winner Connor Hellebuyck.

Kähkönen lost out on the backup position spot to Eric Comrie and was placed on waivers on Oct. 11 for the purpose of reassignment to the AHL with the Moose.

Heinola solid in season debut with Moose

Joshua Frey-Sam 6 minute read Thursday, Nov. 21, 2024

More than 20 minutes of ice time. A shot on goal and a couple of bumps and bruises to mark his official welcome.

All in all, it was a successful season debut for Ville Heinola.

The Winnipeg Jets’ Finnish-born defenceman, who is in the final stages of working back from a second ankle surgery, was given an opportunity to work in every phase in the first of a two-game conditioning stint with Manitoba Moose, which ended in a 5-0 loss to the Chicago Wolves at the downtown rink on Thursday.

A rare 10:30 a.m. puck drop before a raucous crowd of more than 5,000 — predominantly school kids — was an unusual setting for Heinola’s first taste of game action, to say the least.

Vast majority of NHLers still choose to play without neck protection

In terms of hockey gear, it doesn’t look much — a tall, black adjustable collar consisting of cut-resistant fabric and high-impact foam. Yet, to hear it from the majority of today’s NHL players, the neck guard is a form of kryptonite.

Forget about the road less travelled. Sanghoon Shin is on a rather unprecedented hockey journey, one that has landed the South Korean right here in Winnipeg.

The 31-year-old is attempting to keep his NHL dream alive by trying out for the Manitoba Moose.

“I am lucky to be able to come here,” he told the Free Press on Monday following the start of AHL training camp.

Shin is a fascinating story. He fell in love with hockey as a child growing up in Seoul, watching his older brother player the sport, and clearly has some natural gifts along with a tireless work ethic that has earned him praise at plenty of stops along the way.

This is one hat trick Dylan McIlrath won’t soon forget.

The Winnipegger recently captained the Hershey Bears to an American Hockey League championship, which gave him three Calder Cups on his resume — including back-to-back titles with the primary affiliate of the Washington Capitals.

“It was pretty surreal, to be honest. It hasn’t fully sunk in. Going back to back with the Bears, it’s been a wild two years,” McIlrath said in a recent interview. “A lot of hockey. But it’s been great. Really exciting times.”

Thomas Milic didn’t let his mind wander.

As the Winnipeg Jets fifth round pick started out on his professional hockey journey last fall, he spent very little time worrying about which crease he would be tending.

The goalie prospect knew that if he stopped enough pucks, the rest would take care of itself.

The approach seems simple enough, though the execution of that plan is something that can occasionally lead to unnecessary speed bumps for rookies.

There’s some significant Manitoba flavour on both rosters as the AHL Calder Cup final begins on Friday night in Chocolatetown.

The Hershey Bears needed overtime in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference final, but outlasted the Cleveland Monsters 3-2 on Wednesday night at GIANT Center in Pennsylvania to set up a rematch with the Coachella Valley Firebirds.

Hershey captured the 2023 Calder Cup with an overtime win in Game 7, rallying from a 2-0 series deficit to win the 12th American Hockey League title in franchise history.

The Bears have Winnipegger Dylan McIlrath logging big minutes on the blue line, while forward Ryan Hofer of Headingley suited up in 40 games (notching four goals and eight points) during the American Hockey League season but has yet to play in the post-season.
