Woodbine Entertainment announced Thursday the $750,000 turf race has been added to the Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series as an official “Win and You’re In” race.

The new designation offers the winner an automatic, fees-paid berth into the US$2 million Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf event at the '25 Breeders' Cup, which will be held Oct. 31-Nov. 1 at Del Mar.

The E.P. Taylor Stakes will be run over 1 1/4 miles at Woodbine Racetrack's E.P. Taylor Turf Course on Aug. 16. It will share centre stage with the $1-million King’s Plate, the opening jewel of Canada's Triple Crown.

Top Canadian breeder says U.S. tariffs could cripple horse-racing industry

Dan Ralph, The Canadian Press 6 minute read Thursday, Mar. 20, 2025

David Anderson doesn't know what will happen April 2, but he is preparing for the worst.

Earlier this month, United States President Donald Trump paused proposed 25 per cent tariffs on some Canadian and Mexican goods until April 2. Should the U.S. go ahead with its tariffs, Anderson said that would be catastrophic for Canada's horse-racing industry.

Anderson would know. He operates Anderson Farms — one of Canada's leading thoroughbred and standardbred breeding operations — in St. Thomas, Ont., and is the president of the Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society, the official registry of thoroughbred horses in this country.

"It's all breeds, it's show horses, ponies for kids, draft horses. All kinds of breeds will be impacted," he said.

Investigation turns up an Illicit drug in a dozen racehorses following the high-stakes All American

Susan Montoya Bryan, The Associated Press 4 minute read Thursday, Feb. 13, 2025

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — New Mexico regulators have suspended two prominent horse trainers after tests turned up a banned medication in a dozen racehorses that competed in one of the world’s most recognized and richest quarter-horse events.

Officials with the New Mexico Racing Commission described it as unprecedented to have so many top finishers test positive on such an important race day. The All American is equivalent to the Kentucky Derby for thoroughbreds.

More than $5 million in purse money for the All American Futurity and the other races run that September day had been withheld pending the outcome of the testing, which took months to complete.

Regulators announced the suspensions during a news conference Wednesday. The formal notices were issued Thursday.

Rodriguez was second and Madaket Road, giving Baffert a 1-2-3 finish in the Grade 3 race for 3-year-olds. The Hall of Fame trainer won the Lewis for the seventh consecutive time and 13th overall.

Santa Anita postpones weekend racing as track is staging area for fire relief efforts

The Associated Press 3 minute read Sunday, Jan. 12, 2025

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A flareup of the wildfire on the west side of Los Angeles that prompted new evacuations has caused Santa Anita to cancel horse racing this weekend.

The track in Arcadia, near the smoldering Eaton fire that decimated Altadena, had said Friday that it would go ahead with Saturday racing, pending air quality conditions.

However, track officials said early Saturday that given the Friday night developments involving the Palisades fire, there will be no racing this weekend.

They said air quality standards at the track remain well within the limits set by the California Horse Racing Board and the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority, but cited the growing impact of the fires throughout Los Angeles County.

ARCADIA, Calif. (AP) — Barnes defeated stablemate Romanesque by 5 1/2 lengths to win the $200,000 San Vicente Stakes for Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert in a field of Kentucky Derby hopefuls on Saturday at Santa Anita.

Ridden by Juan Hernandez, Barnes ran seven furlongs in 1:22.15 and paid $4, $2.80 and $2.10 as the slight even-money favorite. The 3-year-old colt had $307 more in the win pool than Bullard.

"I knew he would run well,” Baffert said. “I was watching Juan, he knows the horse well, and he said he was a little green. But everyone who has worked him says he has another gear. They are all a little green. The second (race) out is the most important for all these horses.”

Barnes improved to 2-0. He was purchased for $3.2 million as a 2-year-old by owner Amr Zedan.

ARCADIA, Calif. (AP) — Flavien Prat won the $200,000 Mathis Mile Stakes at Santa Anita on Thursday, the French jockey’s record-setting 56th graded stakes victory of the year.

Prat broke the old mark of 55, set by Hall of Fame jockey Jerry Bailey in 2003.

“It is definitely worth all the work when something like this happens,” Prat said.

It was also Prat's 81st stakes win of 2024, extending the mark he set on Dec. 7 at Aqueduct in New York. That's when he surpassed Irad Ortiz Jr.'s single-season record set in 2022.

Veteran jockey Justin Stein retires again, this time to become horse-racing steward

Dan Ralph, The Canadian Press 5 minute read Thursday, Dec. 12, 2024

TORONTO - This time, it feels right for Justin Stein to hang up his tack.

The veteran jockey is retiring after 19 seasons riding thoroughbreds. Stein, 44, left horse racing after 2016 but returned to Woodbine Racetrack in 2019 feeling he was too young then to have called it a career.

Eight years later, Stein feels much more at peace with the decision, given the New Westminster, B.C., native says he'll start next month as a racing steward with the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario.

"I looked at the steward's position and kind of figured if it was meant to be I'd get the job and hang up my tack," Stein said. "If I didn't get it, I'd be OK with riding still because I love riding and could still ride for a number of years from this point on.

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) — Horse racing’s federal oversight agency has launched a digital tool for regulatory veterinarians that provides a holistic view of a horse’s health and performance through its career and medical history.

The Horse In-Sight tool announced Tuesday by the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority (HISA) uses a graph of a horse’s career charted through high-speed furlongs over time with races, workouts and scratches. It also filters for type of treatment, injury outcome and veterinary list status and compares multiple horses through a Race Day tab allowing insight into injections and injuries.

HISA said In-Sight builds on other data methods that helps stakeholders identify horses at risk for injury before racing. The release added that the platform empowers regulatory vets to make timely, informed decisions to enhance health and welfare across the sport.

HISA CEO Lisa Lazarus called the technology a “significant leap forward” in equine care and safety in a release and added that it demonstrates the authority’s commitment to leveraging innovation.
