Herwebenkhet, Chantress of Amun, prostrates herself before the god Geb in the form of a crocodile and drinks from the waters that will unite her with the gods and assure safe passage to the afterlife.

The strongly built shape of the body of the deceased exemplifies a new image for the female figure in this period. It contrasts with the slender images that were in vogue earlier.

Third Intermediate Period, 21st Dynasty, c. 1069-945 BC. Now in the Egyptian Museum, Cairo. SR 19325

A letter to Classics Tumblr

This is a blog post I wrote to talk about: 1) my university experience of academic writing; 2) my frustration with academia, especially the humanities; 3) my struggles with writing and with my mental health; 4) my experience of teaching as an environment which aims to encourage the expression of new ideas; and 5) my project to create a space for ancient studies which encourages people to share their ideas, including an outline of how it would work and how it would benefit our subject. I hope you will find this valuable. I hope you will be happy to support the project. Thank you.

Level 1: There are no surviving records of what this was about.

Level 2: There are some surviving records of what this was about, but they’re from centuries after the fact and may be speculative or fabricated.

Level 3: We have writings from a contemporary primary source regarding what this was about, but it’s often unclear whether the writer is speaking from first-hand experience, and also they’re known to have sometimes just made shit up.

Level 4: We have writings from multiple contemporary primary sources which broadly corroborate each other regarding what this was about, but – and hear me out – what if they’re all lying.

skyrim was named for its prodigious yogurt

to elaborate: one of the main dairy foodstuffs produced by norse farmers in the viking era was a reputedly-delicious yogurt called “skyr.” if we assume that the “-im” suffix in “skyrim” is analogous to the english “-land,” we can (and SHOULD) reasonably conclude that “skyrim” translates to “yogurtland”

The Lod mosaic, discovered in the city bearing that name in Israel, was laid in a luxurious villa urbana in the late 3rd or early 4th century AD.

It contains inter alia a nautical scene presented as a carpet in the form of a pond. The scene includes sea life and two merchant ships.
