Many entrepreneurs who have built livelihoods selling these products are now scrambling to survive the new restrictions that ban the production, sale, and import of cannabis- and hemp-based food products. The Good News: There's still hope. The new gazetted changes are facing significant legal and public pushback. As the cannabis legislative framework continues to take shape, there's potential for further adjustments. While we can't predict the future, it’s clear that the industry's evolution is far from over. The Bigger Picture: This is exactly why business continuity planning and risk management are critical. If these businesses had embraced robust risk management strategies, they could have anticipated and mitigated the risks posed by regulatory shifts. By diversifying their business interests, leveraging comparative law insights, and preparing for unexpected challenges, they could have remained resilient. Looking at global examples, countries like Thailand, the Netherlands, and Canada offer valuable lessons. While #cannabis use is legal in some of these places, edible cannabis products have faced their own regulatory hurdles. Canada, for example, initially banned cannabis #edibles but later regulated them after learning how to manage this market safely. This trajectory offers hope that South Africa might find a similar path forward. For anyone operating in or entering this rapidly evolving market, it's crucial to implement a robust risk management plan. The cannabis framework is still in development, and changes are likely. Businesses must remain adaptable, prepared, and forward-thinking. Whether or not the pendulum swings back in favour of cannabis edibles is uncertain, but one thing is clear: preparation is key.
