Please take into consideration that I haven't seen any of the previous parts. I saw this OAV on Finnish TV as part of a weekly anime special, wrongly announced as the 1984 movie: Choujin Locke. So if you know the characters you might enjoy this anime quite differently.
Naturally I was disappointed while watching something that was advertised as a 'classic', and there was no introduction of the characters. I started to doubt my ability to follow a storyline. I feel for a proper review I should watch it again with this in mind, but I didn't record it, and since there is no review yet at all I decided to write one to give others an idea of what to expect.
The animation is average, computer graphics everywhere, but nothing to blow off your mind. A few nicer backgrounds, but else quite boring.
Sound was ok too, some nicer orchestral background music, else computer music, some reused a lot, and boring, thus fitting to the boring story.
Well, I didn't really get the story, or maybe there was no deeper story other than fighting against a galaxy wide computer program named Elena, which was difficult because Elena made backups of itself. I was reminded of the '82 CGI classic 'Tron' which was much more interesting. I never cared for anything that happened and was desperately looking for sidestories.
But that was difficult because it was assumed that I'd know the main characters, their backgrounds, their relations, whether they're good or bad, etc. But even that didn't seem important during the story. To me there seemed to be no development, except very trivial ones. There was no personality in the characters, they fell from one state of mind into the next without warning.
The only message I got from the makers was: 'Well, we've got a Locke fanbase, we've got a staff and a computer, so let's make a low budget OAV because we haven't got a creative idea for anything.' I wouldn't watch this anime again unless I happen to see all other Locke animes, which is highly improbabe.
But I did enjoy it to the extent that I'm curious of the '84 movie now, which is the first Nippon Animation theatrical movie. I won't go out of my way to see it, but I might stumble across it one day. It wasn't a complete waste of time, since there wasn't anything else to do, and it's always healthy to watch something boring from time to time, it makes you appreciate the good stauff better.
