Men’s Soccer Prospective Student-Athletes

Recruiting Questionnaire

The University of Scranton:  A Jesuit Program

The students at The University of Scranton partake in its Jesuit roots on a daily basis through cura personalis, or “care of the whole person.”  Students are encouraged to become involved with service, learn to think on their own, and lead well balanced lives, so they can “go forth and set the world on fire” upon graduating from The University of Scranton.  The men’s soccer program at The University of Scranton seeks student-athletes willing to participate in the Magis, which is a restless desire for excellence.  The members of the men’s soccer team are asked to lead by example, putting academics, athletics and service at the forefront of their personal development.  Striving to be “men (and women) of others” sets up our student athletes for success on and off the field, as well as life after graduation.

Fitting Into Our Culture

The men’s soccer program takes great pride in its team chemistry and fitting into our culture is a big part of the recruiting process.  The prospective student-athlete must be able to fit into the team’s culture.  The culture of the men’s program is based on our six fundamental core values.  These values underlie our work, how we treat each other, and which strategies we employ to fulfill our mission.  The core values are the basic elements of how we go about our involvement with the men’s soccer program.

Family is “No matter what happens during the season and in our personal lives, we’ll always be supportive of each other.”

Accountability is “Holding yourself and your teammates to the standards of the men’s soccer program through the ups and downs of our time together as members of The University of Scranton’s men’s soccer program.”

Championship Culture is “as we focus on competing for the Landmark Conference Championship and the NCAA Tournament, the student athletes in our program develop an attitude of excellence and striving to be the best in all we do, no matter the challenges and the adversity we may face.”

Passion for the Game is “Being open to learning, self-awareness, constructive criticism, sacrificing your body and putting in the effort for the team in order to establish our Championship Culture.”

Character is “A man with character exhibits heart, hard work, and selflessness excellently when no one is watching.”

Tradition is “The men’s soccer program is rooted in a tradition of success that encompasses passionate and supportive alumni. We aspire to play in the spirit of those past players to create our own history.”

Playing Our Style

The men’s soccer program looks to identify student-athletes who fit in well with the mission of the University and who like to play attractive, possession-oriented soccer.  Our goal is to provide a culture which attracts high-level student athletes who are looking for a personalized education, the opportunity to have athletic success, and a wide-ranging positive college experience.  These factors coupled with strong team chemistry, will allow us to continue creating a championship environment and provide the opportunity to consistently compete for a Landmark Conference Championship and qualify for the NCAA Tournament.

The Recruiting Process

We are committed to finding top level student athletes who fit into our style and the mission of The University of Scranton.  Through our recruiting process, a prospective student will be evaluated through the various college showcases, attending camps or our one day clinics in order to receive an invitation to our preseason.  We offer a very limited number of walk on tryouts.  The following are steps you can take in the recruiting process.

  1. Contact the coaching staff through an email or fill out our online recruiting form whichwill start the recruiting process. Feel free to contact Head Coach Matt Pivirotto at [email protected].
  2. Make a visit to campus with your parents so you can tour campus, attend an information session and meet with the coaching staff.  The coaching staff will make appointments with the individual student-athlete once they have confirmed a tour and information session through the admissions department.  A campus tour and information session can be arranged through the admissions office at 570-941-7540 or http://admissions.scranton.edu/visit/#.VXslVvlVhHw.
  3. Please plan to attend one of our one-day ID clinics in the spring and summer.  Attending the ID Clinic is the best way for the coaching staff to evaluate whether you fit into our style of play and culture of the program.  Although, attendance at the one-day clinics is not mandatory, the clinic gives you the chance to meet members of the team, play under the guidance of the coaching staff and separate yourself from other prospective student athletes.  Our past clinics have proven very fruitful in our recruiting efforts.
  4. In order to make an honest evaluation, the coaching staff makes every effort to see prospective student-athletes play.  Please send us your club showcase schedule, plus any game or highlight videos.  We spend the majority of the spring and summer of the student-athlete’s junior year, as well as the fall, to evaluate the recruiting pool.  We will offer official visits to our top prospective student-athletes through the fall semester, and if needed, early in the spring semester.
  5. Come and see the soccer team play.  Although, it can be very difficult to meet with you on game days, it is beneficial for you to see us play to get a first-hand look at the level of play, the team’s style and the atmosphere of the game.  Check out the schedule to find a game you can attend: http://athletics.scranton.edu/sports/msoc/index.
